Tuesday afternoon, the week of his departure from Duke after six and a half years as administrative assistant, Mr. Charles C. Boone entered the first floor cafeteria expecting to spend the next hour inspecting the area with one of the hospital supervisors. Instead, he was surprised by twenty of his associates at a “going-away” coffee given in hia honor by the Department of Dietetics. Present were the members of what vpas genially called the ‘ ‘ Tuesday Morn ing Coffee Club” and others with w'hom Mr. Boone had worked closely. (The ‘ ‘ members ’ ’ of the former were the heads of the departments of dietetics, housekeeping, personnel and nursing, with whom Mr. Boone had met every Tuesday morning to discuss administrative problems that arose in the areas— Mr. Boone himself dubbed the weekly meetings the “True Confessions Club.”) A folding screen hid those gathered for the coffee from immediate dis covery. Attached to the screen was a sign—spoofing in part the ‘ ‘ Tuesday Morn ing Coffee Club ’ ’—which read ‘ ‘ Tuesday Afternoon Coffee Break Club/Please Enter Without Knocking. ’ ’ In deference to the fact that Mr. Boone is an avid follower of Duke athletics, the cake, baked for the occasion by the hospital bakers, was decorated with a special Duke-blue icing. The event evidently came as quite a surprise to the departing administrator; for before arriving on the scene for the anticipated “inspection tour,” Mr. Boone had taken time out to go on none other than a coffee break! > The 80 candystripers who participated in the 1966 three-month Junior Volunteer Program gave up almost 5,000 hours of their summer vacation to help in the hospital. In appreciation of this generous gesture on their part, they were honored at a September swimming party and buffet supper given by the Hospital Auxiliary, sponsor of the annual program. The girls were guests in the home of Auxiliary member, Mrs. O. E. Esval. Assisting were Mrs. Harold Silberman, president of the Hospital Auxiliary, Mrs. Pauline Stillwell, chair man of the Auxiliary shop cart service, and Mrs. C. C. Daugherty, coordinator of the Junior Volunteer Program. Shown above are candystripers Ruth Ham- shar, Rosalyn Bryson, and Kathy Hilliard.
