Construction, Construction - Every where You Look
Work begins on Research Park
The construction of Research Park - Buildings 1, 2,
and 3, which will begin in the near future, represents
a whole new idea in Medical Center construction.
These temporary buildings will provide much needed
space to our research personnel investigators until
permanent.space is available. These buildings will
be good enough to last 15 years; the permanent build
ings will be comparable to Medical Sciences I. Perm
anent space at this time would cost four times as
much and the funds are just not available. The build
ings in this project will be 10,800 square feet each
and will cost approximately $575,000 for all three.
In keeping with the temporary character of the build
ings, the exterior will be of metal panels.
The research programs to be housed in these build
ings include the Cardiovascular Care Research Program,
the Division of Immunology and Immuno-transplantation
Program, the research programs for the Department of
Pediatrics. The Biomedical-Engineering Research Pro
gram is a dual effort with the School of Engineering.
There will be a vaccine laboratory for the Department
of Medicine and a Metabolic Research Lab for the De
partment of Medicine. This project will form an im
portant addition to the research facilities of the
Medical Center.
Landis cleared for 44 KVA
Another new project that the University has under
taken is the converting of all sources of energy for
air-conditioning, heating, lighting, steam, etc. from
coal and the-heating plant, to electric power. Even
tually, the coal pile, the heating plant and its two
chimneys will be eliminated. Just across the road
from where this digger stands ready, the trees are
already cleared for the construction of the 44 KVA
(44,000 volts) power loop. Work is beginning on Med
ical Center assigned land for Substation I, which is
on Erwin Road opposite the Statler Hilton. From there
the cable will be laid underground (the trench will be
six feet wide and a minimum of -six feet deep) along
Erwin Road past Hanes House and the Graduate Center,
behind the Graduate Center to the site of Substation
II, directly south of the Grad Center, 'rtfeliminary
grading is underway and the trench excavation for the
cable will be started in April. A connecting power
line will be installed in a trench between Substation
II leading along Hospital Drive to the railroad and
along the railroad to the present power station,
causing some disruption of traffic during the installa
tions. Work will continue on Substation III, to be
located on Anderson St. opposite the entrance to the
Sarah P. Duke Gardens.
Final touches on Rehab 1
Rehabilitation Phase I is just about ready for its
new occupants. Surgical OPD will move in on the-
ground floor, where it will expand to include rehabili
tation programs. The Division of Orthodontics will
move in to the first floor with Dr. Galen Quinn and
Dr. Wallace Abbey. And, also on the first floor will
be the Speech and Hearing Divisions; Dr, Raymond Massen-

his staff are occupying space until their west wing
renovations in Baker House are completed. The Depart

Henry McIntosh and others. And finally, the Department
of Pediatrics has assigned offices to Dr. Susan Dees,
