And congratulations to Dr. § Mrs. Patrick Breen who have a baby girl bom May 3. Dr. Breen is an Associate in Anesthesia. In Audiovisual Ed., we welcome Hendrik A. van Kijk, Jr., who is in the Medical Photo graphy section as photographer. In the Business Office, we welcome Mrs. Eleanor Matthews, a former bookkeeping dept, employee, who has returned to Hospital bookkeeping May 8. Congratulations to Miss Anne-Lise Karlsen of the cashiers' section, who is engaged to Paul Moson, student in the In Physician Assistance Program. They will be married in the Duke Chapel October 5. Congratulations to Carol and James T. Barnhill, Jr. who have a new son, James Turner, III, bom May 4. Carol is a recent and long-time employee of the Hospital Business Office. Also, to Myra and Clay Morgan, who have twin daughters Kerri Amanda and Cherri Miranda, who were bom April 30. Myra is a former Hospital Insurance department employee. In Data Processing, congratulations go to Miss Susan Comwell who is engaged to Edward R. Hill to be married August 3. In the Emergency Room, we welcome Shirley Reams as ward clerk, Fletcher Evans, orderly and Eleanor Thompson, supervisor of Emergency Lab. In Hospital Ad ministration, we welcome Mrs. Una Engel, who began work in the Hospital Director's Office May 27. Her husband is a graduate student in the Dept, of Chemistry. In Medical PDC, congratulations go to Louise Steiger ^o will be married on June 8 to Mr. William Heizer and Juan ita Ledford who will marry July 6 to Mr. Worth R. Cates. We welcome, Mrs. Melrose Harris as payroll clerk in Med ical PDC. In the Operating Room, congratulations to Dr. and Mrs. Jim Pickens, who have a baby boy bom May 16. In Ophthalmology, congratulations to Dr. H. James Herring Resident in the department and Carol Peters, Dietician on Rankin Ward, who were married May 4. And to Dr. § Mrs. Frank Hannah who have a baby girl bom May 10. And Dr. § Mrs. Noel Young who have a baby boy born April 28. In Pathology, we welcome Miss Sandra O'Hara, secretary; David Zehr, who has joined the Histology Lab for the summer; Naomi Kaufman who is working with Dr. Trump; Mrs. Mary Jackson who is on Training Program in Histology and Miss Cynthia Potter, Who also is on the Training Program in Histology. Congratulations to Dr. § Mrs. Hugo Jauregi who have a baby girl bom in May. And congratulations to Miss Gayle Cooke who is engaged to Mr. Roy McKee. Pro motions in Pathology went to Miss Gayle Cooke and Mrs. Carol Voelkel who are now Registered Technicians in His tology. In Unit Administration, we welcome Fred Newman, Mary Royster, Claude Brown and Susan Fidler, R.N. In Psychiatry, congratulations to Dr. § Mrs. Sam Rubin who have a new baby boy, Mark, born April 26 and Dr. § Mrs. Andre Derdeyn have a baby boy, bom May 13. In Physical Therapy, we welcome Robert Federchuck, clinical supervisor and Judy Schelegel, staff physical therapist. Congratulations to Miss Bette Busch who is engaged to Dr. Benedict Maniscalco. And Mrs. Grace Horton has a new baby girl. Mrs. Sue Evans will be retiring after 10 years service at Duke Medical Center. She served as registrar in the Medical Outpatient Clinic for seven years and as clinic registrar and receptionist for the Psychiatric Outpatient Clinic for three years. She has mothered everyone from doctor to secretary with her warm and sparkling person ality, and was willing to listen to anyone's probl'em. We wish for Mrs. Evans a relaxing and happy retirement. PROFESSIONAL NEWS Mary B. Campbell, CRNA, Director of the School of Anesthesia, participated in the annual meeting of the Virginia Association of Nurse Anesthetists in Winches ter, Virginia, May 23-25. Her paper was "A Travelogue to Dreamland",, about pre-anesthetic psychology for children. The 4th National Forum on Hospital and Health Affairs was held at Duke May 17 and 18 by the Graduate Program in Hospital Administration. A work shop on "Orthopedic Nursing" was held Thursday after noon May 2 with Dr. Lenox Baker in charge . Appearing along with Dr, Baker were Dr. Frank Clippinger, Dr. Frank Bassett, Dr. Donald Bassett all of the Orthope dic staff at Duke. Dr. Joseph A.C. Wadsworth attended the American Ophthal- mological Society Meeting May 29-May 31 in Hot Springs, Virginia. Dr. Wadsworth has an honor in being named to Who's Who in America. Dr. Peter Burkholder attended the "Complement Workshop" in Boston, Mass., June 3-5. There is an article regarding the Physician's Assistant Program in the May-June issue of American Journal of Nursing, by Miss Thelma Engles. ^ ’ Helen Kaiser, Director of Physical Therapy and Asso ciate Professor of Physical Therapy at Duke, will pre sent the Fifth Mary McMillan Lecture on June 5, during the 1968 Annual American Physical Therapy Association Conference in Chicago. Participating in the Tri-State Medical Technologists Convention held in Asheville, N.C., May 3-5 were four speakers from Duke University. Approximately 500 tech nologists, pathologists, students and laboratory per sonnel attended this first regional joint meeting of the North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee Socie ties, affiliates of the American Society of Medical Technologists. Dr. J. Leonard Goldner and Dr. Ralph Coonrad attended a joint meeting of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand with the French Hand Society and the British Hand Society in both London and Paris and Portugal from May 4 to May 14, 1968. Dr. Goldner presented a paper concern ed with management of rheumatoid arthritis of the hand. Dr. Coonrad presented a paper concerned with management of unusual fractures of the digits. They both also visit ed a special hip center. Cochin Hospital in Paris, as guests of Dr. M. D'Aubigne. On June 1, Dr. Goldner, Dr. Lenox D. Baker and' Dr. Ralph Coonrad participated in a conference sponsored by members of the North Carolina Bar Association, the North Carolina Academy of General Practice, and other: members of the Medical Society of the State of North Carolina. This conference was about medical-legal problems of interest to doctors and lawyers. Dr. Goldner discussed prepara tion of medical reports for use by attomeys. Dr. Baker discussed the role of the expert medical witness, and Dr. Coonrad discussed communication between physician and attorney. Dr. Frank H. Bassett attended a meeting of the Piedmont Orthopedic Society in Point Clear, Alabama, participating in the presentation of Orthopedic material. Dr. John Glasson currently is President of the Piedmont Orthopedic Society and presided over this annual meeting.
