Woodhall Named Special Assistant

Aniyan to Take Over
As Associate Provost
Dr. Barnes Woodhall, associate provost
for medical affairs, will become special
assistant to the president of the university
Jan. 15.
Dr. William G. Aniyan, while remain
ing dean of the School of Medicine, will
assume Dr. Woodhall's duties and title as
associate provost.
Announcement of the promotions was
made by University President Douglas M.
Knight Dec. 14. The appointments were
approved by the University Board of
Trustees at its meeting here early in
December.
Commenting on the announcement.
Dr. Knight said, "Dr. Woodhall's unique
understanding of the many purposes and
needs of a modern university are a tre
mendous asset to Duke, and in his new
position he will be free to work directly
with a broad range of problems, including
those of university development. We are
truly fortunate that he is willing to accept
such a responsibility while continuing his
activity in the field of neurosurgery.
Dr. Woodhall, professor of neurosur
gery, succeeded Dr. W. C. Davison as dean
of the School of Medicine in I960. At the
same time he was named vice provost of
the University. Dr. Woodhall relinquished
the deanship to Dr. Aniyan in 1964 to de
vote full time to his duties as vice provost.
He was promoted to associate provost for
medical affairs in 1967. As associate pro
vost, Dr. Woocjhall was responsible for
supervision of the entire medical center,
including the School of Medicine and the
