13 Appointments, Promotions Announced
Ten promotions and three new ap
pointments to the medical center staff
were announced by former University
Provost R. Taylor Cole last month.
Earning promotions were five mem
bers of the Department of Anesthesiol
ogy, one in the Department of Biochem
istry, two in the Department of Medicine
and two in the Division of Orthopaedics.
Dr. Frank W. Clippinger, Jr. in ortho
paedics and Dr. Kenneth D. Hall in anes
thesiology have been named full profes
sors. Both were formerly associate pro
fessors.
Dr. Clippinger, who earned his M. D.
degree from Washington University in St.
Louis in 1952, has been at Duke since

Given Jan. 30
DR. WANGENSTEEN
A man whose association with the
University of Minnesota as a student,
teacher, and physician spans more than
a half-century delivered the fourth annual
Clarence E. Gardner lecture at the med
ical center Jan. 30.
Dr. Owen H. Wangensteen, professor
emeritus of surgery and Regents Professor
of Surgery at Minnesota, spoke on "The
Historical Aspects of the Evolution of
the Management of Acute Intestinal Ob
struction." The lecture was also part of
the Dean's Hour series.
The Gardner Lecture is named for Dr.
Clarence E. Gardner, professor emeritus
of surgery and former chairman of the
department at Duke.
1958. He has completed Duke's Ortho
paedic Training Program.
Dr. Hall, who received both his under
graduate and M. D. degrees from Duke,
was first appointed to the staff here in
1958. He has previously worked with the
National Institute of Neurological Dis
eases and Blindness.
Three men have been promoted to the
rank of associate professor. They are Dr.
Heriberto Ferrari and Dr. Vartan Vartan
ian in anesthesiology and Dr. Frank Bas
sett III in orthopaedics.
Dr. Ferrari, who received his medical
education at the University of Buenos
Aires in Argentina, came to Duke in 1964
for a residency in anesthesiology. Dr.
Vartanian, a graduate of Cluj University
Medical School of Rumania, was on the
staff of the Azounieh Hospital for Chest
Diseases before coming to Duke. A grad
uate of the University of Louisville Scho
ol of Medicine, Dr. Bassett is also assist
ant professor of anatomy.
Five men have moved up to assistant
professorships. Dr. Patrick J. Breen, orig
inally from Ireland, and Dr. James LeRoy
King, a graduate of Bowman Gray School
of Medicine at Wake Forest University,

iliary gave nearly 14,000 hours of their
time to volunteer services at the hos
pital in 1968, according to the group's
annual report.
The report was presented to the mem
bership at a business meeting Jan. 15 at
the Duke graduate center. New officers
for the year were installed at the morning
gathering. Installing officer was Mrs.
Alan K. Manchester.
Serving as president of the organi
zation will be Mrs. Harold Silberman.
Other officers are Mrs. Roland Wilkins,
first vice-president; Mrs. Samuel S. Wiley,
second vice-president; Mrs. Robert Col-
ver, third vice-president; Mrs. Blaine Nas-
hold, recording secretary; Mrs. H. Frank
lin Bowers, corresponding secretary; Mrs.
T. W. Minah, treasurer and Mrs. Cary
Cole, historian.

orial lectureship in cooperation with the
Duke School of Nursing which has been
were named assistant professors of anes
thesiology.
Dr. Jayant G. Joshi, who received his
education at the University of Poona in
India, has been promoted to assistant
professor of biochemistry.
In the Department of Medicine, Dr.
Michael E. McLeod and Dr. Robert H.
Peter, both formerly associates in med
icine, have been named assistant profes
sors. Dr. McLeod and Dr. Peter are grad
uates of the Duke School of Medicine.
Appointed associate professor of ex
perimental surgery and associate profes
sor of biomedical engineering was Dr.
Brian Andrew Hills, a graduate of Cam
bridge University. Dr. Hills was formerly
associate professor of medical science at
Brown University.
Dr. James E. Hammond II, formerly a
research assistant and instructor at Duke,
has been appointed assistant professor of
community health sciences and assistant
professor of biomedical engineering.
Dr. Rebecca H. Buckley, was named
assistant professor of pediatrics. A grad
uate of the University of North Carolina
School of Medicine, Dr. Buckley is also
an associate in immunology.
