Vrofessional news people on the move Gets Degrees Dr. Philip Handler, who left his position as pro fessor and chairman of the Department of Biochemis- try-Genetics to begin a six- year term as president of the National Academy of Sciences last month, was awarded two honorary de grees from major U. S. universities recently. Case Western Reserve University of Cleveland presented Dr. Handler an hono rary doctor of science degree at the school's commencement activities June 11. Dr. Handler also received an honorary LL. D. degree from Emory University in Atlanta June 9. Commencement Speaker Dr. Eugene A. Stead, Florence Mc Alister Professor of Medicine, gave the commencement address June 5 at the State University of New York Down- state Medical Center in Brooklyn. Dr. Stead, former chairman of the Department of Medicine, spoke on "Ex periences in Learning" at the school's 111th graduation ceremonies. Receives Fellowship Dr. James L. Frank, a resident in orthopaedics, has been awarded a six- month $3,250 clinical fellowship in his specialty by the United Cerebral Palsy Associations Research and Educational Foundation. The grant became effective July 1. Gives Paper, Course Dr. Galen W. Qiiinn, professor of orthodontics, presented a paper on "Oc- clusion-Our Professional Goal" at the North Carolina Dental Society meeting May 12-13 at Pinehurst. Dr. Quinn also gave a course on the treatment of facial anomalies for the dental corps at Ft. Benning, Ga., May 23-24. Visitor Dr. Robert W. Wheat, associate pro fessor of microbiology and immunology, will visit the laboratory of microbiology of Dr. Luis Carbonell in Caracas, Vene zuela, this summer. The men will discuss common research interests in cell surface, diagnostic, prognostic and protective anti gens of several pathogenic fungi. Gives Presentation Dr. Howard Thompson, associate pro fessor of medicine and biomathematics, delivered a presentation on the uses of computers for patient monitoring at a meeting of DECUS in Maynard, Mass., May 12. At Board Meeting Dr. Joseph A. C. Wadsworth, professor and chairman of the Department of Oph thalmology, and Dr. A. C. Chandler, Jr., assistant professor in the department, attended a board meeting as members of the N. C. State Commission for the Blind in Pinehurst May 20. Dr. Chandler also recently attended the School of Medicine conference at Teer House. Director Dr. George Maddox will serve as direc tor of the Research Training Program for the Department of Psychiatry's Study of Aging in the absence of Dr. Carl Eisdorfer who goes on sabbatical leave. Mrs. Bar bara Minton will continue to handle details of the program. President Here Eugene M. Michels, president of the American Physical Therapy Association, visited the Duke physical therapy area May 15 to talk with students and staffers at an informal coffee hour. Hospital administrators along with representatives of several other professional fields at tended the gathering. Among the topics discussed were plans for the graduate education program in physical therapy. Attend Seminars Miss Rebecca Owins, R. N., operating room supervisor, participated in a two- day seminar on interdepartmental re lations sponsored by Ethicon, Inc., June 5-6 in Norfolk, Va. Miss Owins and Mrs. Betty Tyman, R. N., assistant operating room super visor, attended a Davis and Geek, Co., nursing consultant panel meeting in Char lotte June 12. Elected Dr. James Moris, assistant professor of cardiology, has been elected to the board of directors of the North Carolina Heart Association. At iVIeeting, Gives Lecture Dr. W. Glenn Young, Jr., professor of surgery, attended a joint meeting of the Society of University Surgeons and the British Research Society in London June 30-July 3. Dr. Young then traveled to Padua, Italy, to visit and lecture at the University of Padua School of Medicine July 5-10. Gives Lectures Dr. Eugene M. Renkin, professor of pharmacology, presented a talk on "Capil lary Permeability to Large Molecules" at the meeting of the Czechoslovak Physio logical Society in Martin, Czechoslovakia, June 30-July 1. Dr. Renkin also spoke at the Depart ment of Physiology of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences on "Nervous Con trol of Peripheral Circulation" July 2-5 in Prague.
