Employes Get Extended Coverage
New Health Benefits Provided
Hospitalization insurance coverage for
employes who are now participating in
the University's Blue Cross—Blue Shield
plans increased substantially September
1 without any increase in cost to the em
ploye.
The old $18 plan has been expandecf
to provide a $25 per day room allowance,
increased inpatient and outpatient cov
erage and new benefits for extended care
outside the hospital.
The old $12 plan now provides a $20

Medical Education Head
Dean Title Abolished
Dr. Thomas D. Kinney, chairman of
the Department of Pathology at the Med
ical Center since I960, has been named di
rector of medical education.
The new post was created by the
Board of Trustees in August and the se
lection of Dr. Kinney was announced
September 4 by University Provost Mar
cus E. Hobbs.
With the establishment of the new po
sition, Duke has dropped the title of dean
of the School of Medicine. It is a part of
a series of organizational and title changes
that have taken place during the year, in
cluding the promotion of former Dean
William G. Aniyan to the post of vice
president for health affairs.
The administrative reorganization was
recommended by a committee appointed
late last year to consider restructuring the
administration of the School of Medicine
within the framework of the Medical Cen
ter.
As director. Dr. Kinney will be re
sponsible for all educational programs in
the School of Medicine and the Medical
Center, except those of the School of
per day room allowance and additional
in- and out-patient coverage.
Both changes became effective auto
matically September I for employes who
presently have hospitalization insurance
through the Duke group plan.
In October, a third plan will be offered
to all employes to provide full semi-pri
vate room coverage in addition to the
other benefits of the $25 plan.
When details of the new semi-private
plan are announced later this month, any
employe who presently has either the $25
plan or the $20 plan may convert his poli
cy to the semi-private system with a re
sulting increase in his monthly insurance
payments.
Employes who currently are not cover
ed by hospitalization insurance at Duke
may apply for coverage under any of the
three plans in October. Benefits will be
come effective November I for those who
apply in October.
The usual waiting periods before bene
fits for maternity care or pre-existing con
ditions are paid will not apply for persons
insured on September I or November I.
Employes interested in applying for in
surance for the first time or who wish to
change their present coverage should con
tact the Medical Center Personnel Office,
Room 1160 Hospital, extension 3424, dur
ing the first week of October.
