MR. DONELAN
Davison Member Dies
A charter member of the Medical
Center's Davison Club died in Durham in
early August.
Dr. Hunter M. Sweaney, a practicing
physician in the city for many years, was
75 at the time of his death.
In the spring of 1968, Dr. Sweaney and
his daughters endowed a continuing an
nual lectureship in surgery to be shared
by Duke and the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Known as the "Dr. Hunter Sweaney
Visiting Lectureship in Surgery," the pro
gram is designed to bring renowned sur
geons from all parts of the world to the
two campuses to share their knowledge
and experience with students of medicine,
particularly those specializing in surgery.
Dr. Sweaney was a graduate of the
University of Pennsylvania School of
Medicine.
MR. COBB
Clarence H. Cobb, business manager of
the Medical Private Diagnostic Clinic for
the past 31 years, has been promoted to
the post of director of M.P.D.C.
Mr. Cobb will assume administrative
responsibility for the operation of the pri
vate clinic and oversee all its activities.
A 1938 graduate of the Duke Program
in Hospital Administration, Mr. Cobb has
been at Duke since 1933. He earned his
undergraduate degree at the University of
North Carolina the same year. He is a
member of the Medical Group Manage
ment Association and a fellow in the
American College of Clinic Managers.
Medical P.D.C. also announced three
other administrative changes recently.
Promoted to business manager of the
clinic was Ralph Hawkins, formerly assist
ant business manager. Mr. Hawkins will
take charge of general operations of the
clinic. He is a 1961 graduate of the Uni
versity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
with a B. S. degree in business adminis
tration and a member of the M.G.M.A.
New assistant business manager replac
ing George Whiteside III who recently ac
cepted a position with Marquette Univer
sity Medical Center is Patrick Lavern
Powell. Mr. Powell earned his B. S. in
business administration from U.N.C. in
1964 and came to Duke following four
years in accounting at Liggett and Myers,
Inc.
Appointed insurance office supervisor
for the clinic was William J. Donelan. Mr.
Donelan comes to Duke following com
pletion of a B. A. degree in political sci
ence at Wheeling College in Wheeling, W.

Va. He did some graduate work in law at
U.N.C.
In addition, James C. Mau, administra
tive assistant in the Department of Medi
cine, has been named associate director
of the Medical P. D. C. for the Depart
ment of Medicine. He will aid in long-
range planning of the clinic and serve as a
liaison between the private practice of
medicine and other Department of Medi
cine affairs.
Mr. Mau, also administrative director
of the Physician's Assistant Program, is a
1957 graduate of the University of Iowa.
