9 Faculty (continued from page seven) Dr. Mallory, a graduate of Princeton University, earned his M. D. at Duke and has been an associate in psychiatry work ing at Highland Hospital in Asheville. Dr. Workman earned his B. S. degree from Presbyterian College in Clinton, S. C., in 1956 and his M. D. from the Med ical College of South Carolina in I960. He also comes to Duke from Highland Hospital. The two appointments in physiology went to Dr. Balthasar F. Gisin and Dr. John Gutknecht. A native of Switzerland, Dr. Gisin completed his Ph. D. degree in organic chemistry at the University of Basel. He was formerly guest investigator at Rock efeller University in New York. Dr. Gutknecht earned his B. A. and Ph. D. degrees in zoology from Ohio Weslyan University in 1959 and 1963, respectively. He has been a postdoctoral fellow at Duke since 1967. Promoted from an associate in the de partment to assistant professor of veteri nary medicine was Dr. Bobby F. Sher wood. He was awarded his B. S. degree from North Carolina State University and his D. V. M. from the University of Georgia. He came to Duke in 1965. Dr. William D. Gentry, who has been a clinical intern at Duke for the past year, was appointed assistant professor of med ical psychology. He received his B. A. de gree in sociology and psychology and his M. S. and Ph. D. degrees in clinical psy- cology from the Universityof Florida. Named assistant professor in the di vision of immunology was Dr. Samuel R. Olenick, a graduate of Wayne State Uni versity. He earned his M. D. from the University of Michigan School of Medi cine in 1955 and his Ph. D. from the Uni versity of Pennsylvania in 1967. Dr. John B. Nowlin, formerly an associate in the department, has been apF>ointed assistant professor of commun ity health sciences. Dr. Nowlin earned his B. S. and M. D. degrees from Duke and was an intern, resident, and fellow in medicine here. Dr. T. Boyce Cole, originally from Rockingham, N. C., was named assistant professor of otolaryngology. He is a grad uate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received his M. D. de gree from the same school in 1962. Newly appointed assistant professor of orthodontics is Dr. Andrew P. Collins, who comes to Duke from the University' of Washington at Seattle. Dr. Collins, a graduate of Clemson University, earned a doctor of medicine in dentistry at the University of Ken tucky in 1967 and an M. S. in dentistry from Washington earlier this year. Appointed assistant professor of oph thalmology was Dr. Maurice B. Landers, III. Dr. Landers attended Princeton Uni versity and was awarded his M. D. degree from the University of Michigan School of Medicine in 1963. He completed his residency at the Jules Stein Eye Institute of the University of California at Los Angeles in 1967. Dr. Ronald B. Luftig has been named assistant professor of microbiology. Dr. Luftig earned his B. S. and M. S. degrees in mathematics in New York and was granted his Ph. D. in biophysics from the University of Chicago in 1967. Four changes of status announced by Dr. Hobbs affected the departments of surgery, immunology and biomedical en gineering. Dr. Donald Silver, associate professor of surgery since 1966, has been given the additional title of associate professor of pediatrics. Dr, Silver earned his A. B., B. S. and M. D. degrees from Duke and completed his internship and residency in general and thoracic surgery at the hospital. Dr. Hilliard F. Seigler, presently assist ant professor of surgery, has assumed the additional post of assistant professor of immunology. He came to Duke in 1965 following completion of his B. A. and M. D. degrees at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Named assistant professor of immun ology was Dr. Rebecca H. Buckley, form erly an associate in the division. She re tains her title as assistant professor of pediatrics. She is a graduate of Duke and was awarded her M. D. degree from U. N. C. at Chapel Hill in 1958. Dr. John W. Moore, formerly pro fessor of physiology and biomedical en gineering, has returned to the title of pro fessor of physiology. He received his undergraduate education at Davidson Col lege and his M. A. and Ph. D. degrees in physics from the University of Virginia. DR. BRIAN Med Graduate Gets Silver Star A 1966 graduate of the Duke Universi ty School of Medicine has been awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in Vietnam. Capt. Earl W. Brian, Jr., a native of Raleigh, won the citation while serving as battalion surgeon of the 228th Aviation Battalion, First Cavalry Division. The citation noted that during a rock et attack on Camp Martin Cox,"his ex traordinary heroism was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military ser vice and reflects great credit upon him self." Following his 'internship at Stanford University Hospital in California and pri or to his entry into the service Capt. Brian was named executive secretary of the California State Social Welfare Board by Governor Ronald Reagan. He is be lieved to be the youngest man ever to. have held that post.
