In launching its new program in Unit Administration, Duke retained its veteran unit administrator, Ned Kearns, promot ed three men from within the hospital and brought in two others from the out side. Here are brief biographical sketches of the six: NED KEARNS Responsible for a unit of surgical wards made up of Reed, Cushing, Mc Dowell and Halsted. Kearns, who was born in Denton, N. C., and reared in Lexington, studied at the University of North Carolina and had worked in dealer and consumer fi nance and industrial loans before becom ing collections manager for Duke Hos pital in 1957. In that first job he had responsibility for helping patients with better financial planning for hospitalization and for or ganizing a collections unit as part of the hospital business office. From there Kearns was promoted to chief admitting officer, the position he held before being named unit admini strator when the trial unit was established three years ago. Kearns' main outside interest is singing bona fide barber shop harmony. He is an executive director, music librarian and master of ceremonies for the Raleigh chapter of SPEBSQSA, the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America. He and his wife, the former Jane Bullock of Durham, have a son and a daughter and live at 1003 North Driver St. LIN BENTEL Responsible for the general medical unit including Minot, Hanes, Osier and Long wards. Earl Franklin (Lin) Bentel II, a native of Durham, began work at the medical center in March as a staff accountant in the office of the assistant controller and was promoted to unit administration. Prior to coming to Duke, Bentel was associated with the Crum and Forster Insurance Group and Reliance Insurance (continued on page twelve)
