Howard Lee is tackling a new job at Duke. In his role as assistant to Dr. Thomas D. Kinney, director of medical education --a job he has held since earlier this fall-- Lee is heading up a new employee pro gram at the Medical Center called PEP. PEP means Paths for Employee Pro gress. It is founded on the idea that the purpose of an educational institution isn't only to educate from the inside out, but also from the inside in. Duke doesn't want any employee who has the personal incentive and the ability to advance to another job to be held back because there is no path for him to follow to get there. Lee, former director of employee re lations who also is mayor of Chapel Hill, made these observations in his pro posal for the program: "The overall purpose and objective of this program is to provide a central office to help employees learn about and take advantage of any and alt educational programs in the allied health field, which are now a part of the Duke University health education program. "Also," Lee said, "this program is designed to make sure that any employee who has the desire and interest is given every opportunity to advance himself or herself educationally as well as to increase the possibilities of greater upward mo bility in the health field for employees at Duke University." Since assuming duties as assistant to Dr. Kinney, Lee has been working pri marily in medical school recruitment, particularly among minority groups and the disadvantaged. LEE New Assistant Administrators on Duty hi Kenneth Holt, Richard Peck Join Duke Staff Two new assistant directors of the hospital have been named by hospital administration. They are Kenneth M. Holt of Durham and Richard H. Peck of South Euclid, Ohio. Both began work November 17. They join S. Douglas Smith and Oscar R. Ay lor as assistant directors of Duke Hospital. Mr. Holt, 37, has been assistant di rector of Watts Hospital in Durham since November 1966. Prior to that appoint ment, he was assistant administrator of Petersburg General Hospital in Petersburg, Va. MR. PECK MR. HOLT (continued on page eleven)
