PROFESSIONAL NEWS people on the move New Chairman Dr. Morton D. Bogdo- noff, professor of medicine and assistant director for graduate medical education at the Medical Center, will assume a position as pro fessor and head of the Department of Medicine at the University of Illinois Ckillege of Medicine Jan uary 1, 1970. He earned his M. D. degree from Cornell Uni versity Medical College in 1948. He became an asso ciate professor at Duke in 1959 and a professor in 1962. New President Dr. J. Leonard Goldner, chief of the division of orthopaedic surgery, took office as president of the Southern Medi cal Association November 12 at the organization's annual meeting in Atlanta. A member of the association since 1951, Dr. Goldner has held several offices including the chairmanship of the ortho paedic and traumatic surgery section and the first vice presidency. Elected Fellow Dr, Harold R. Silberman, associate professor of medicine, has been named a fellow in the American College of Physi cians. He received the honor October 8. Wins Essay Award Peter T. Scardino, third-year medical student, received a $50 prize from the Southern Medical Association for winning second place in the association's Junior Medical Students Essay Contest. His paper was titled "Bacterial Diar rhea in Eastern Nicaragua." Give Papers Dr. William Johnston, Dr. Edward Bossen, and Miss Joseph Amatulli, all of the Department of Pathology, presen ted scientific papers at the American Society of Cytology meetings in Chicago November 5-11. Miss Amatulli won the annual award for the best presentation of a scientific paper by a cytotechnologist. She was also elected to the Cytotechnology Ad visory Committee. Miss Amatulli and Dr. Johnston served as moderators for a session on the teach ing of cytotechnology. N. C. President Dr. Richard Lester, chairman of the Department of Radiology, began a one- year term as president of the North Carolina Chapter of the American College of Radiology in mid-November. He took office at the group's annual meeting in Mid Pines. At Meeting Dr. Barry Ramo of the Cardiac Care Unit attended the annual meeting of the American Heart Association recently in Dallas, Tex. At Congress Several Medical Center dietitians at tended the International Congress of Dietetics in Washington, D. C., the week of September 7. The annual American Dietetic Association meeting was held at the same time in Washington. Speaker Mr. Warren Bird, associate director of the Medical Center Library, was guest speaker at the breakfast meeting of the Junior Members of the Roundtable of the North Carolina Library Association at their annual meeting in Charlotte. He spoke on "Implications of Automation for Libraries." At Meetings Rebecca Owins, R. N., supervisor of operating room nursing, attended a super vision and management seminar October 27-30 in Chicago. Miss Owins along with Mrs. Betty Ty- man, R. N., assistant supervisor of opera ting room nursing, attended the regional Davis and Geek panel meeting October 30-31 in Atlanta. Gives Programs Dr. Galen W. Quinn, professor of orthodontics, presented a program on "Maxillary Expansion" at the Southern Society of Orthodontists in Memphis, Tenn., October 19-22. Dr. Quinn also presented a table clinic on "Temporotpandibular Joint Problems" at the Third District Dental Society meeting in High Point November 1-3. At Institutes Mr. Robert Federchuck, clinical direc tor of physical therapy, attended an institute in developing rehabilitation ser vices in hospitals and related institutions sponsored by the American Hospital Asso ciation in Chicago October 15-17. He also attended an institute on ad ministration, supervision, and consulta tion sponsored by the American Physical Therapy Association the week of October 26 at the Oklahoma Center for Contin uing Education in Norman, Okla. At Milwaukee Dr.' Ewald W. Busse, professor and chairman of the Department of Psychia try, was the Kradwell Visitor at the Milwaukee Psychiatric Hospital in co operation with the Marquette School of .Medicine September 18-20.
