P. N. Workshop Held at Duke in October Duke played host to a statewide nurs ing workshop on cancer October 30. A- pproximately 500 licensed practical nur ses from North Carolina attended the day-long session. The workshop, sponsored by North Carolina Practical Nurses Association, fea tured members of the Duke staff as par ticipants. Dr. Charles H. Peete, professor of obstetrics and gynecology, served as keynote speaker with a talk on cancer of the cervix. A panel discussion titled "The Patient has Cancer" opened the program. In cluded on the panel were Miss Evelyn Morgan, head nurse on the new Cancer Research Unit; Dr. John Laszio, chief of medicine at the Veterans Administration Hospital; Mrs. Judy Moreland, R. N., head nurse on Third West; the Rev. William Crittenden, a chaplain resident; and Dr. William Gray, a psychiatrist. Lecturers for the afternoon session were Dr. Sigfried Heyden, associate pro fessor of community health sciences, who spoke on the epidimiology of cancer of the cervix; Dr. John Evans, professor of radiology, who talked about radiation therapy, and Miss Sue Norville, assistant professor in the School of Nursing, who discussed the responsibility of nurses taking care of cancer patients. The program was planned by the North Carolina L. P. N. Association Edu cation Committee. Mrs. Elizabeth Bur roughs, a Duke L. P. N., is a member of the committee. The Medical Center's vice president for health affairs is the new chairman-elect of the Association of American Medical Col leges (AAMC). Dr. William G. Aniyan, who served as chairman of the AAMC's Council of Deans last year, will assume elective leadership of the organization next year. The association is the group mainly re sponsible for overseeing administrative and educational developments in Ameri can medical schools and teaching hos pitals. The current chairman is Dr. Robert Howard, dean of medicine at the Uni versity of Minnesota. Dr. Daniel C. Tosteson, chairman of the Department of Physiology-Pharma- cology, was elected chairman of the AAMC's Council of Academic Societies. Duke's new director of medical edu cation, Dr. Thomas D. Kinney, is a former chairman of that society and currently serves as its representative to the association's executive council. The Council of Academic Societies, the Council of Deans, and the Council of Teaching Hospitals together make up the membership of the AAMC. A graduate of the Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Aniyan has been at Duke since 1949. A professor of surgery, he was dean of the School of Medicine and associate provost for medical affairs until the Board of Trustees promoted him to vice president earlier this year. Chef’s Corner PUMPKIN DREAM PIE This is a mild, fluffy version of every one's holiday favorite. 1 cup canned pumpkin 3/4 tsp. pumpkin pie spice 1 package instant vanilla pudding 2/3 cup milk 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1/2 cup milk 1 package Dream Whip 1 8-inch pie shell Bake pie shell until golden brown. Make Dream Whip according to pack age directions using vanilla and 1/2 cup milk. Mix one cup of the Dream Whip with pumpkin, pudding, pumpkin pie spice, and 2/3 cup milk. Beat slowly with mixer for one minute. Pour mixture into baked pie shell and chill two hours. Top pie with remaining Dream Whip before serving. Send your favorite recipe to Intercom, Box 3354.
