PROFESSIONAL NEWS people on the move New Book Dr. Daniel C. Tosteson, chairman of the Depart ment of Physiology and Pharmacology, is editor of a new book titled T/ie Molecular Basis of Mem brane Functions. The book, work of a symposium sponsored by the Society of General Phy siologists, includes articles on current investigation in the field of membranes. Wins Prize Dr. W. N. Kelley, assistant professor of medicine, won the Geigy International Rheumatism Prize at the Twelfth Inter national Congress of Rheumatology held in Prague, Czechoslovakia, for his work on "Hypoxanthine-guanine Phosphoribo- syl Transferase Deficiency in Gout." Present Papers Four members of the Department of Surgery faculty presented papers at the scientific sessions of the American Heart Association in Dallas November 13-16. At Meeting Three Duke School of Nursing faculty members participated in the 1969 Ameri can Nurses Association clinical confer ences held in Atlanta November 5-7 and in Minneapolis November 17-19. Carol Ruth Tyler, R. N., M. S. N., an instructor at the school, gave a talk on "The Nurse's Influence on Mr. Brown's Orientation" in the session on geriatric nursing. During the medical-surgical section, Dorothy J. Brundage, R. N., M. N., an instructor at Duke, talked on "A Study of the Identification of Patients Pre disposed to Adverse Drug Reactions." Virginia Stone, R. N., Ph. D., director of graduate studies and professor of nursing, also gave a talk at the sessions during a part of the program titled "There's Something New About the Old." Lecturer Dr. Seigfried Heyden, associate pro fessor of community health sciences, gave a lecture at the Biochemical Society of Vienna, Austria, October 28. Dr. Heyden also presented a talk to the Licensed Practical Nurses Association meeting in Durham October 30. Re-Appointed Dr. Robert W. Wheat, associate pro fessor of microbiology and immunology, was re-appointed this month to- the edi torial board of the Journal of Bacterio logy, the official publication of the Amer ican Society for Microbiology. Gives Paper Dr. Thomas R. Cate, associate profes sor of medicine, will present a paper on "Interferon Activity from Serum and Lymphocytes During Influenza" at the meeting of the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation in New Orleans January 29-31. Co-authors of the paper are Drs. C. E. Buckley, III, S. M. Mc Mahon, G. M. Halprin, and M. J. Zitt. At Meetings Dr. Frank W. Clippinger, Jr„ professor of orthopaedic surgery, will serve as examiner in adult orthopaedics for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons in Chicago January 13-15. Dr. Clippinger will also serve as chair- mai of the publications committee and be in charge of public relations for the meeting of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand January 15-17. He will attend the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons meeting January. 17-22. Elected Dr. Rebecca Buckley, assistant profes sor of pediatrics and immunology, has been elected to a six-year term on the board of examiners of the sub-board of pediatric allergy of the American Board of Pediatrics. At Speech Meetings Dr. Raymond Massengill, director of medical speech pathology, along with Miss Viola Willis and Miss Sandy Barrie, both speech pathologists, attended the American Speech and Hearing Association meeting in Chicago recently. Dr. Massengill presented papers on cleft palate and glo^ctomy. Along with Mrs. Rozalyn Bradley, speech pathologist. Dr. Massengill atten ded a special education conference in Charlotte. He was a member of a panel on "Early Childhood Education for the Speech-Impaired Child." Elected Dr. John P. Tindall, assistant professor of dermatology, was elected secretary of the dermatology section of the Southern Medical Association at the organization's meeting November 8-12. At Institute Mrs. Mary McColm, director of out patient department nursing, attended a recent institute in Chicago on Nursing Service Management—Specialty Depart ment. In Bombay Dr. W. K. Joklik, chairman of the Department of Microbiology-1 mmunology, at Duke, was one of three American representatives to the Third International (continued on /Mge eight)
