PROFESSIONAL NEWS Congress on Global Impacts of Applied Microbiology in Bombay, India, Decem ber 7-12. He served as chairman of the session on "Control of Virus Diseases." The Congress was held under the auspices of UNESCO, FAO, the World Health Organization and the International Association of Microbiological Societies. At Regional Meeting Kathy Kruse and Jane Weaver, both reference librarians, attended the Regional Medical Library Group meeting in Be- thesda, Maryland, November 21. Editor Dr. David C. Sabiston, Jr., chairman of the Department of Surgery, has accepted the editorship of the new edition of the Davis-Christopher textbook of surgery published by the W. B. Saunders Co. Gives Papers Dr. J. Leonard Goldner, professor and chief of the division of orthopaedic sur gery, presented two papers on tendon injuries and hand surgery at the regional meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in Miami December 12-14. Dr. Goldner also delivered a talk at the Veterans Administration Hospital in’ Oteen, N. C., December 17. Dr. Goldner will serve as president of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand at the group's annual meeting in Chicago beginning January 14. The sub ject of the meeting is the organization of residency training for hand surgery. January 17-24, Dr. Goldner will attend the meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons to serve as an instructional course moderator and be on a panel on cerebral palsy. He will present a paper along with Dr. Stephen Lang and Dr. Donald E. McCollum. At Workshop Rebecca Ferguson, head nurse on Reed ward, attended an Inpatient Care Work shop November 5-7 in Atlanta. Gives Paper Dr. W. Glenn Young, professor of surgery, gave a paper on "Lung Changes During Hemorrhagic Shock" at the 23rd Postgraduate Assembly in Anesthesiology in New York City December 17-19. (continued from page two) At Meeting Attending the recent meeting of the American Society of Hematology were Dr. Wendell Rosse, Dr. Andrew Huang, Dr. Wayne Rundles, Dr. Harold Silberman, Dr. Donald Miller, Dr. Peter Lauf, Dr. Larry Lessin, Dr. Gerald Logue, Dr. John Laszio, Dr. William Kremer, and Dr. John Glockerman. Dr. Rosse, in conjunction with J. H. Crookston and Marie C. Crookston, gave a paper on "Red Cell Membrane Abnor malities in Hereditary Erythroblastic Mul- tinuclearity." Dr. Peter Lauf, along with Dr. Rosse, gave a talk on "The Solubilization of the "I" and "I" Antigens in Human Red Cells." Dr. Huang, along with Dr. Kremer and Dr. Laszio, presented a paper on "CLL Lymphocytes: Abnormal DNA Meta bolism following UV-lrradiation." Gives Papers Dr. Anthony Dowell* assistant pro fessor of medicine, gave a paper on "The Effects of Ozone on Rabbit Alveolar Macrophages" at a symposium on Biolo gical Effects of Oxidant Gases presented by the Air Pollution Control Adminis tration in Cincinnati December 10. Dr. Dowell will deliver a talk on "Lung Structure and Function Alterations Pro duced by Acute NO2 Exposure" at the 29th VA-Armed Forces Pulmonary Dis ease Research Conference in Cincinnati January 26-29. Wins Contest Dr. James R. Urbaniak, assistant pro fessor of orthopaedic surgery, won first prize in the essay contest of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand for a paper on "Laceration of the Flexor Pol- licis Longus-A Clinical Analysis of De layed Repair and an Experimental Study with Chkken Flexor Tendons." Dr. Urbaniak will present the paper at the society's meeting in Chicago January 26. At Meeting Dr. Raymond Massengill, director of medical speech pathology, attended the Acoustical Society meeting in San Diego recently to present a paper on "Influence of the Tongue on Oral and Nasal Sound." Chairman Dr. David C. Sabiston, Jr., chairman of the Department of Surgery, has been appointed chairman of the Surgery B Study Section of the National Institutes of Health. The appointment begins July 1, 1970, and will end June 30, 1972. Visiting Professor Dr. Lenox D. Baker, professor of orthopaedic surgery, served as visiting professor at Columbia Presbyterian Hos pital in New York, The University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and Tulane University in New Orleans during Novem ber and early December. Dr. Baker also spent ten days at the Roosevelt Hospital of the University of Guatemala and other institutions in that country. While he was there, he was made an honorary member of the Ortho paedic Surgery Association of Guatemala. Elected Dr. John Laszio, associate professor of medicine, has accepted a position with the Pharmacology B study section of the National Institutes of Health. At Meeting Three Duke surgeons attended the Third Annual meeting of the Associatior for Academic Surgery in Boston Novem ber 20-22 at Harvard University and the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. Dr. F. Maxton Mauney presented a paper on "Cardiac Oxygen Toxicity". Dr. Paul Ebert served as recorder for the association while Dr. DavkI C. Sabis ton, Jr., was elected a trustee. Give Papers Dr. Keith S. Grimson, Dr. R. W. Postlethwait, and Dr. James E. Davis of the Department of Surgery, presented papers at the annual meeting of the Southern Surgical Association in Hot Springs, Va., December 8*10. At Meeting Dr. Pauline Gratz, professor of nur sing, will attend a seminar in the cor relation of instructional media and curri culum planning in New York January 21. The CLEAN CAT is coming.
