PROFESSIONAL NEWS To Conduct Workshops Mrs. Grace H. Polansky, associate in psychiatric social work, will conduct workshops in early 1970 on casework with the aging for the Henderson County Council for the Aging and the Veterans Administration Hospital Social Service Department in Salisbury. Gives Paper Dr. Toshio Narahashi, professor of Duke's two-year School of Nurse Anes thesia graduated 13 women January 7. Four remain on the staff of the Depart ment of Anesthesiology. Following an address by Chaplain P. Wesley Aitken, Dr. Sara Dent, chairman of anesthesiology, presented certificates to the graduates at ceremonies in the hospital's Allen Memorial Chapel. The 24-month curriculum for graduate registered nurses includes both classroom study and clinical practice with special emphasis on anatomy, physiology, and the pharmacology of anesthetic drugs. Students also receive instruction in pre- and post-anesthetic care of patients. Gra duates are eligible to take the qualifying examination for membership in the Amer ican Association for Nurse Anesthetists. Lecturer Dr. Marcel Kinsbourne, chief of the division of pediatric neurology, delivered A new class of 14 students, including six men, began January 12. Director of the school is Miss Mary Campbell, a certified registered nurse anesthetist. The four graduates who are staying at Duke, and their home states, are Mari anna Glenn, Florida; Gladys Hauser of North Carolina; Judith Milburn Rose, Massachusetts, and Ruth Reifsnyder of Georgia. The other new nurse anesthetists and their home states include Dorcas Cope land, South Carolina; Nancy Ellis Heim, Kentucky; Suzanne Feil, Illinois; Susan Hairston Campbell, Alabama; Judith La- Moe, Minnesota; Ann Mason, Alabama; Eleanor Osborne, North Carolina; Patricia Prichard, Kentucky, and Emma Wagner, Tennessee. the Aaron Brown Lecture at the Univer sity of California at Irvine School of Medicine January 21-22. In South America Dr. William W. K. Zung, assistant pro fessor of psychiatry, presented a paper on "The Pharmacology of Disturbed Sleep" at the Third International Congress of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine in Buenos Aires, Argentina, January 8-23. He also conducted a workshop on psy chometric testing. Gives Paper Dr. David C. Sabiston, Jr., chairman of the Department of Surgery, delivered a paper on "Tumors of the Heart" at the Society of Thoracic Surgeons meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, January 12. To Give Paper Dr. John Gutknecht, assistant pro fessor of physiology and pharmacology, will present a paper with Dr. D. C. Toste- son titled "Anion Permeability of Ultra- thin Lipid Membranes" at the Biophysical Society meeting in Baltimore February 23-27. At Symposium Dr. Eugene M. Renkin, professor of physiology, presented a paper on "The Nutritional Shunt-flow Hypothesis in Ske letal Muscle Circulation" at a symposium on Local Regulation of Blood Flow at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duante, California, January 3-5. At Meetings Dr. Ralph W. Coonrad, assistant clini cal professor of orthopaedics, participated in two panel discussions and served as discussor for a paper at the American Society for Surgery of the Hand meeting January 15-18. Dr. Coonrad also attended the Ameri can Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons meeting January 17-22. To Give Paper Dr. Rebecca H. Buckley, assistant pro fessor of pediatrics and immunology, will present a paper at the American Academy of Allergy meeting in New Orleans Feb ruary 14-18.
