Hold Workshop
Thirty-six members of the Duke Hos
pital Auxiliary attended the organiza
tion's first workshop at the Medical
Center February 4.
The aim of the morning-long session,
according to Auxiliary President Mrs.
George Maddox, was to explain fully
the ^als and operation of the group to
the members and hence develop more
dedication and enthusiasm.
Auxiliary officers spoke to the group
about membership, leadership, finances,
projects, programs, and communications
during the session.
The workshop was followed by a
luncheon at the hospital.
Taking part in the program in addi
tion to Mrs. Maddox were Mrs. Roland
Wilkins, Mrs. H. Shelton Smith, Mrs.
John Everett, Mrs. Harold Silberman,
Mrs. Theodore Minah, Mrs. Samuel Wiley,
Mrs. Alan Manchester, and Mrs. Charles
Daugherty.
from 5 to 8 p.m. and each Thursday
from 3 to 6 p.m., the clinic offers a free
checkup for anyone. As part of the
screening, each visitor receives a chest
X-ray to reveal any signs of lung cancer,
heart enlargement and tuberculosis.
The Durham County Health Depart
ment performs and covers the cost of the
X-ray and laboratory work.
Dr. D. T. Moore, chief of obstetrics
and gynecology at Lincoln; Dr. E. L.
White, house officer at Lincoln, and
Mrs.- Mary Pointer, a registered nurse, are
assisted by Dr. Siegfried Heyden, associ
ate professor and head of the division of
epidemiology at Duke.
The members of Operation Break
through are carrying the message of the
clinic to the community by informing
citizens that the free clinic is available
to anyone.
The seven are Mrs. Bedine Wells, Mrs.
Pearl Williams, and Mrs. Inez Gooch,
health associates; Mrs. Rosa Lyons, Mrs.
Doris McMillan, and Mrs. Shirley Thomp
son, health assistants; and Mrs. Louise
Rend, coordinator of Operation Break
through's health program.
The physicians urge citizens to partici

cancer deaths reported in the U. S. each
year could be prevented through early
detection.
