Sabiston Jr., professor and chairman of the Department of Surgery, was visiting professor of surgery at Ohio State University April 19-21. To Attend Course Mrs. Virtee M. Glenn, supervisor of the Emergency Room laboratory, has been selected to participate in a short course on "Laboratory Methods in Pathogenic Enteric Bacteriology" May 25-29 at the School of Public Health of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Consultant Dr. Pauline Gratz, professor of nursing, is serving as consultant in science at the University of Wisconsin School of Nursing. Gives Paper Dr. Thomas Daniel, resident in surgery, presented a paper at the annual meeting of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery in Washington D.C., April 7. At Meeting Mrs. Sandy Herzog, staff physical therapist, attended the American Burn Association meeting in Boston April 10-11. Attend Workshop Carol Schutz R.N., and Eula Coleman, A.L.P.N., attended the American Hospital Association Workshop in In-Service Education in Washington D.C., April 6-9. Visitors Board Holds Meeting The Medical Center's Board of Visitors met at Duke April 23-25 for its annual review and discussion session. The board, a panel of professionals representing the fields of business, finance and health, visits the Medical Center annually at Duke's request to appraise the operation and suggest possible improvements. One board member is Dr. John H.i Knowles, director of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and the subject last year of a month-long dispute over appointment of an assistant secretary of Health Education and Welfare for health and scientific affairs. Unrelated to his Board of Visitors function, Knowles spoke at the April 23 Director's Hour in the hospital amphitheater on "Population and Pollution." During a day-long session April 24, the board heard reports on medical, nursing and allied health education; present and planned physical facilities; Duke Hospital; and medical center management programs. Henry E. Rauch, chairman of the finance committee of Burlington Industries and a trustee of Duke University, is chairman of the Board of Visitors. Other members besides Rauch and Knowles are: Dr. Francis James Braceland, senior consultant at The Institute for Living in Hartford, Conn.; Dr. Kenneth R. Crispell, dean of the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville; Dr. Martin M. Cummings, director of the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Md.; Dr. Ruth B. Freeman^ professor of public health administration at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Dr. Jacob Koomen, director of the N.C. State Board of Health; Miss Lucille Mercadante, visiting professor and consultant in nursing administration at the State University of New York in Brooklyn; Dr. Ben N. Miller of Columbia, S.C.; Raymohd D. Nasher of the Raymond D. Nasher Co. in Dallas, Tex.; Dr. John R. Pappenheimer, professor of physiology at Harvard University in Boston; Marshall I. Pickens, vice chairman of the Duke Endowment in Charlotte; Dr. William R. Pitts of Charlotte; John M. Russell, past president of the John and Mary R. Markle Foundation in New' York; Dr. Rozella M. Schlotfeldt, dean of the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland; and Richard J. Stull, executive vice president of the American College of Hospital Administrators in Chicago.
