PROFESSIONAL NEWS Ophthaimological Society in Rochester, New York, May 14 and 15 to present a lecture on "Thyroid Exophthal- mopathy." Participants Two members of the division of orthopaedic surgery participated in the annual meeting of the North Carolina Medical Society recently. Dr. Lenox Baker, past president of the society, served on several committees and was a representative in the House of Delegates. Dr. J. Leonard Goldner, chief of the division, addressed the session and presented a paper to the orthopaedics section. At ANA Jane Howell, supervisor of Emergency Room nursing, and Inez James of Patient Care Education, attended the American •Nurses Association convention in Miami recently. On Cruise Dr. James F. Glenn, professor and chief of the division of urology, participated in the Southeastern section of the American Urological Association cruise April 10-19 to present papers, serve on panels and narrate a movie titled "Technique of Ileal Conduit Urinary Diversion." Dr. Glenn also attended the annual .meeting of the American Association of Urological Surgeons in Philadelphia May 9-16. He participated in the program of the American Association of Genito-Urinary Surgeons meeting May 6 in Williamsburg, Virginia. Gives Talk Dr. James B. Sidbury presented a discussion on ‘‘Clinical Aspects of Inherited Disorders" at the University of Alabama April 9-10. At Meeting Dr. Miriam Jacobs, Miss Emy Villaneuva, and Mrs. Jean Barr, all of physical therapy, attended the_ Southeastern Region, Council of Physical Therapy School Directors meeting in Atlanta May 14-15. Tosteson, Tieffenberg, Lauf, Kirk, and Gunn of the Department of Physiology-Pharmacology attended the federation meetings In Atlantic City, New Jersey recently. At Conventions Dr. William W. Shingleton, professor and chief of the division of general surgery, attended the recent meeting of the North Carolina chapter of the American College of Surgeons at Wrightsviile Beach to serve as program chairman. Dr. Shingleton also attended the American Surgical Association meeting in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, April 27-29, the meeting of the American Gastroenterologic Association May 21-22, and participated in a site visit to the Mayo Foundation in Rochester, Minnesota, May 12. Attend Meeting Dietitians attending the North Carolina Dietetic Association meeting at Wrightsviile Beach April 23-24 were Miss Helen McLachlan, Mrs. Ruth Lowe, Mrs. Anne Sites, Mrs. Linda Williams, and Miss Gail Howard. Dietetic interns at the convention were Miss Olivia Bennett, Mrs. Janice Prettiman, Mrs. Susan Whittaker, and Mrs. Shirley Anderson. At Meeting Mrs. May G. King, administrative assistant for the Committee on Admissions, attended the annual meeting of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers in New Orleans April 19-23. Presents Lecture Dr. A. C. Chandler, Jr., of the Department of Ophthalnnology, presented a lecture on ‘‘Overcorrection of Exotropia" at the annual alumni meeting of the Institute of Ophthalmology in New York April 24-25. Dr. Chandler also attended the West Virginia Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology meeting in White Sulphur Springs April 15-18 and was a delegate to the North Carolina Medical Society annual meeting in Pinehurst May 17-19. Voting Member Mrs. Mary E. McColm, director of outpatient nursing, was made a voting member of the board of the North Carolina Society for the Prevention of Blindness recently. Visiting Lecturer Dr. Samuel L. Katz, chairman of the Department of Pediatrics, was visiting professor at the Mt. Zion Hospital Department of Pediatrics in San Francisco May 18-21. At Course Mr. Robert Federchuck, associate in physical therapy, attended a course on the Review of Electrotherapy and Electrodiagnoses at the University of Tennessee medical units. School of Physical Therapy April 20-22 in Memphis. At Workshop Iva Cain, head nurse in the Employe Health Office, attended a workshop on "Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases" in Raleigh recently. New Edition Dr. David C. Sabiston, Jr., professor and chairman of the Department of Surgery and co-author of the textbook Surgery of the Chest, has been informed that a Spanish edition of the work will be published in the near future. Dr. Sabiston was recently re-elected to a three-year term as governor representing the Southern Surgical Association to the American College of Surgeons. Wins Contest Dr. Edmond Gonzales of the division of urology, won the Montague L. Boyd essay contest on the American Urological Association Southeastern section cruise April 10-19 for a paper on "Experimental Estimation of Transviceral Digoxin Absorption." At Congress Dr. Loring R. Helfrich and Dr. W. Thomas Woodard, Jr., of the Department of Surgery attended the Southeastern Surgical Congress in Atlanta April 20-23. (continued on pege twelve)
