Aniyan, vice-president for health affairs, was formerly head of the group’s Council of Deans and will assume the chairmanship of the AAMC later this year. PEP can make a difference. In your job. In your future. In your outlook on life. PEP means Paths for Employe Progress, a Medical Center program designed to give employes a chance to move up the job ladder through education. The program acts as a clearing house for information on more than a dozen health-related training programs in the area. Counselors with PEP can advise and aid employes about requirements and application procedures for these health programs. But, more importantly, the PEP Program is able to provide financial aid to employes who participate in PEP as they continue their education. Most often, employes helped by PEP keep their regular job' part-time and receive a stipend while they are in school. Since the PEP Program was established last November, Director Howard Lee and his staff have responded to more than 200 inquiries about educational opportunities from Duke employes. "We want to help each employe interested in advancing himself work out the best educational plan," Kenneth P. Lineberger, Jr., PEP coordinator, said. PEP's first student-employes began courses in March. Presently one Duke employe is in licensed practical nurse training, two are working on bachelor's degrees in nursing at North Carolina Central University, and another is taking a correspondence course. When schools open in September, PEP hopes to have several dozen more employees enrolled in a variety of training programs. Some L.P.N.'s and P.C.A.'s have applied to the Duke Physician's Assistant Program, and more than a dozen P.C.A.'s ward clerks, secretaries, and dietetics employes plan to begin practical nurse training. A catalogue containing more information about PEP and the health programs coordinated through it will be available to employes within the next few months. "We are delighted with the response to the program so far," Mr. Lineberger said. "Supervisors are enthusiastic about prospects for employes to get more' education and learn new skills." Mr. Lineberger added that any Medical Center employe interested in moving up’ into some area of the health professions should come to the PEP Office and talk with the staff (no appointment necessary). The office is temporarily located on the first floor of the hospital near the main lobby. Telephone extension is 6343. 10-YEAR AWARDS—employes in the Department of Dietetics talk with Medical Center Personnel Director Robert Tuthill at a reception in their honor last month.
