tPN's Report
On Convention
The following article was written
by the president of the Duke
Licensed Practical Nurse
Organization to report on the
activities of that group's state
convention for those L.P.N.'s who
were not able to attend.
BY MRS. DOROTHY C. McNEIL
On May 8, a group of L.P.N.'s
left Durhann by car to attend the
L.P.N. state convention in
Asheville.
The opening sessions dealt with
introduction of area presidents,
members of the executive board,
recognition of Duke's L.P.N.
organization, and mention of the
advanced classes we have here.
Mrs. Mary C. Adams, state
president and one of our own
graduates, gave the opening address.
Taking a sub-topic from the theme
"Involvement in Communities," she
spoke on "We, as L.P.N.'s. Must
Move On."
She said, "During the 23 years
the L.P.N.'s have been organized,
we have gone through many
changes and adjustments; however,
there is much room for continued
improvement and advancement. Let
each of us meet 1970 with a
challenge. God, foresight, wisdom,
and vision will give each of us
courage to move on."
It takes faith and courage to
improve."
The student nurses had very
interesting essays on "Why I Want
to Be an L.P.N." These will be
forthcoming in the Cardinal Echo.
There was a very interesting film
on "Drug Abuse." After listening to
the different lectures, it was readily
understood that one cannot over
educate oneself to live in a society
that is rapidly changing. "We must
Be Ready to Meet These
Changes!!"
The tour of the governor's
summer home and the mountain
trails are almost indescribable. It
was enjoyed by everyone.
Oliie, Vick, the Smoky
Mountain Cloggers, and the Rev.
Grady Nutt provided the
entertainment for us.
The Grove Park Inn where we
convened was elegant and I do
mean e-l-e-g-a-n-t.
It should be noted that Duke
Medical Center had the highest
number of L.P.N.'s belonging to the
association and also the highest
number attending the convention.
The convention was not geared
to the nurse at the bedside, but I'm
sure each of us that attended have a
better understanding of his/her role
in the community. It was
educational and enjoyable. After
talking with L.P.N.'s from other
hospitals, your morale really got a
boost, to discover that you aren't
the only one with problems.
Thanks again for sending Mrs.
Coleman and me to represent you.
Don't forget the national
convention in Boston,
Massachusetts!!
