President-Elect
Dr. Ewald W. Busse,
chairman of the
Department of
Psychiatry, was elected
president of the
American Psychiatric
Association at the
organization's recent
meeting in San
Francisco. He will take
office in May, 1971.
Gets Award
Dr. Ovidio Duarte-Escalante, a
member of the urology staff,
recently received the Physician's
Recognition Award in Continuing
Medical Education from the
American Medical Association for
his work in research and teaching.
The award was made June 7.
Speaker
Dr. William W. Johnston,
associate professor of pathology,
will be a featured speaker at the
Southeastern Association of
Cytotechnologists meeting in New
Orleans in August. His talk will be
on "Detection of Fungus in
Cytopathologic Material."
Participant
Dr. Samuel L. Katz, chairman of
the Department of Pediatrics,
presented talks on "New Concepts
in Infectious Hepatitis" and "Viral
Vaccines and Immunizations" at
the annual meeting of the Seaboard
Medical Association June 13-21 in
Nags Head, North Carolina.
Dr. Katz also will participate in
the Postgraduate Medical Education
Course given at the University of
Colorado Medical School at Aspen.
He will give talks on
"Chemotherapy for Viral
Infections," "Changing Concepts in
the Effects of Viruses on the
Central Nervous System,"
"Intrauterine Viral Infection," and
"Vaccine Development" at the July
19-22 session.
Co-Chairman
Dr. Grace P. Kerby, professor of
medicine, served as co-chairman of
a sub-group at the Food and Drug
Administration Workshop on
Pharmacologic and Clinical
Evaluation of Anti-inflammatory
Drugs June 1-2 in Rockville,
Maryland.
At Meeting
Dr. Jack K. Goodrich, associate
professor radiology and director of
the division of nuclear medicine,
will attend the 17th annual meeting
of the Society for Nuclear Medicine
n Washington, D.C., July 6-12.
Dr. Goodrich is chairman of the
group's standing committee on
awards and a member of the board
of trustees. He and several other
members of the Duke staff will
present three papers at the meeting.
He was recently named a
committee member for the
Commission on Nuclear Medicine
of the American ‘College of
Radiology.
At Meetings
Dr. W.K. Joklik, chairman of the
Department of Microbiology and
Immunology, was an invited
participant at the Cold Spring
Harbor Symposium on Quantitative
Biology in New York June 5-11. He
also attended the Gordon
Conference on Animal Cell and
Viruses at Tilton, New Hampshire,
June 29-July 3.
Dr. Joklik recently joined a
Research Career Award Committee
of the National Institutes of Health
for a four-year term.

Dr. Marcel Kinsbourne, associate
professor of pediatrics, attended
the American Neurological
Association meeting in Atlantic
City, New Jersey, June 16—18.
From June 24 to 27, he was at the
Cerebral Function Symposium in
Denver, Colorado.
Elected
Mr. C. Edward McCauley,
associate director of Duke Hospital,
was elected chairman of District 4
of the North Carolina Hospital
Association at the group's May 21
meeting in Raleigh. The district
represents 13 North Carolina
counties.
Featured
Professor Elon Clark of the
divison of audiovisual education
was featured in the Spring, 1970,
issue of /Vews and Views, the
alumni periodical of the Rochester
Institute of Technology. Mr. Clark
is a 1931 graduate of that school.
On Faculty
Dr. James J. Morris, Jr.,
associate professor of medicine, was
a member of the guest faculty at
"Five Days of Cardiology," a
course in Atlanta May 11-15.
