Re|X)rter: Gwen Evans There's a young woman tooting around in a 1930 Model A at the Hospital these days. She's Mrs. Kitty Hatfield, the new Hospital accountant. Mrs. Hatfield, who has been in the newly created position a few weeks, explained that her job will involve working with hospital accounting and i-nformation services. Accounting systems in hospitals include many types of information such as documents used to charge patients for services rendered, budgets, cost studies and reports. One objective of her job will be to work with hospital administration in developing more meaningful management reports. She will be working with all aspects of the accounting policies and procedures apropos to the Hospital's needs. Her immediate supervisor, Mr. Ronald Lochbaum, said that Mrs. Hatfield's work with hospital administration and members of the professional staff in developing more meaningful cost data will be of major significance in more effective management of costs. He added that her work with Miss Nina Waite, special reports officer for the hospital, in preparing data for reimbursement reports such as Medicare and Medicaid will be important in assuring maximum recovery of allowable costs. A native of Greensboro, Mrs. Hatfield received her A.B. in economics at Guilford College in 1967 and received her certified public accountant (CPA) certificate in October, 1970. She is currently finishing her masters thesis on reimbursement principles for Medicare at the University of North Carolina where she has completed requirements for and M.S. in accounting. Mrs. Hatfield's husband John is a first year law student at UNC. They are the parents of a seven-year-old daughter, Cynthia. She is the daughter of Mrz. C.D. Kusenberg of Greensboro and the late Mr. Kusenberg. Prior to coming to Duke, Mrs. Hatfield worked for the Greensboro office of Peat, Marwick and Mitchell and for a local CPA firm in Charleston, S.C. As for her interests, that Model A is a good indicator. She collects antiques. The next issue of Intercom, set for distribution November 18, will be a special edition commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Medical Center. Be sure to watch for it!
