SPECIAL—"To private duty nurses and staff of Duke Medical Center: Thank you so very much for the beautiful plant I received during my illness.” Doris Reddrick Duke Gets Grant The John A. Hartford Foundation, Inc., of New York has made an award of $170,313 to the Medical Center for a three-year study of macular degeneration, a little-understood blinding condition. Announcement of the grant was made jointly by Harry B. George, foundation president, and Dr. William G. Aniyan, vice-president for health affairs at Duke. Duke researchers believe that macular degeneration—traditionally thought to be hereditary—may instead be caused by metabolic disturbances. They will try to identify these metabolic defects and determine if they can be corrected by diet or drugs. The research project will involve both the departments of ophthalmology and pediatrics. Mrs. Andrews Named Mrs. Kree Andrews has recently been named the new administrative assistant to the director of nursing services. Miss Wilma Minniear. Prior to her assignment, effective Oct. 5, 1970, she has been a payroll clerk for nursing services since 1961. Mrs. Andrews and her husband, Claiborne, live in Timberlake, and are the parents of a daughter. She is originally from Person County. She replaces Al Taylor, who is now administrator of the Durham Rehabilitation Center on Erwin Road. A program of popular songs spiced with a-few melodies of the Thanksgiving season will be featured at the Duke Medical Center Chorus concert scheduled November 13. The concert, set for 8 p.m. in Room 213 of the East Duke Building, is planned as a children's benefit. All proceeds will go to provide items for sick and needy children at Butner and in Edgemont. Some of the more familiar tunes the chorus will present include "He," "The Impossible Dream," "This Land Is Your Land," and "Born Free." A quartet consisting of Michael Jenkins of Pickens Rehabilitation Center, Wesley Brown of the operating room, Theodore Freeland, director of the group, and Jerome Saunders, a student, will present four selections during the concert. Soloists will include Miss Sarah Judd of Hanes ward, Ronnie Johnson of Cushing and William McDuffie of X-ray. Adult tickets, available from chorus members or at the door, are 50 cents and children will be admitted free. The chorus plans more concerts during the Christmas season.
