Professional News Honored Dr. Barnes Woodhall, James B. Duke Professor of Neurosurgery, was guest of honor recently at the 20th anniversary meeting of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons in St. Louis. Each year the congress selects an outstanding neurosurgeon from somewhere in the world and designates him Honored Guest for his lifetime contributions to the neurosciences. During the meeting. Dr. Woodhall also presented three papers: ''History of Neurosurgery—The Dandy Era," "Neurosurgery of the Present," and "Neurosurgery of the Future." New Members Donald Cheek, manager of the Hospital Business Office, and Mrs. Lucile D. Capps, assistant manager, have been selected for membership in the HospitaJ Financial Management Association. President of the North Carolina chapter of the 8,000-member organization is Ronald A. Lochbaum, assistant University controller for the Medical Center. Jeff H. Steinert, assistant vice-president for business and finance. Medical Center, Is past national president. Appointed Dr. Carl Eisdorfer, professor of psychiatry and medical psychology, was recently named chairman of a 35-member task force on aging for the American Psychological Association. The task force will present a report for the APA to the 1971 White House Conference on Aging. Katz, chairman of the Department of Pediatrics, participated in a discussion on "Immunizations—Progress and Problems" during the general session of the American Academy of Pediatrics meeting in San Francisco this fall. At the same meeting, Drs. Rebecca H. Buckley and Donald P. Schwartz presented a discussion on "Serum IgE Concentrations and SJin Reactivity to anti-lgE Antibody IgA Deficient Patients" before the meeting's section on allergy. Gives Lecture Dr. Stanley H. Appel, chief of the division of neurology, gave a talk at the regional conference of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in New Orleans recently. Dr. Appel, a research grantee of the society, spoke at a symposium on current progress in multiple sclerosis research. Elected Dr. Ewald P. Busse, professor and chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, was named chairman of the Board of Regents of the Southern Psychiatric Association at the organization's annual meeting in West Palm Beach, Fla., recently. Also named was Dr. William P. Wilson, professor of psychiatry, who was re-elected secretary-treasurer of the group. On Board Dr. Robert W. Wheat, associate professor of microbiology and assistant professor of biochemistry, has been appointed to the editorial board of Infection and Immunity, official publication of the American Society for Microbiology. The term extends through 1973. Dr. Wheat is also a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Bacteriology. In Chicago Miss Lottie Bolding and Miss Daisy Frieze, both RN's in the Emergency Department, attended a five-day course for emergency room nurses given by the Chicago Committee on Trauma at the Palmer Hilton Hotel in Chicago. Attends Meeting Dr. Robert L. Habig, director of the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory, attended the Technicon International Congress on Automated Analysis in New York last month and participated in a round table discussion on "Initial Operating Experiences with theSMA 12-Micro." Elected Dr. Kenneth D. Hall, professor of anesthesiology, has been elected president of the North Carolina Society of Anesthesiologists. He was named at the organization's annual meeting this fall. Presides Dr. J. Leonard Goldner, professor and chief of the division of orthopaedic surgery, presided at the annual meeting of the Southern Medical Association in Dallas last month. HOSPITAL'S NEW CHAPEL WOS^fSS-Duke Hospital's G.G. Allen Memorial Chapel now has a new hostess, Mrs. Gloria Johnson of Durham, who will assist visiting clergy, patients and visitors in chapel related matters. With a patient roll listed by denomination, she can assist visiting clergy by quickly locating patients. Another service will be to aid persons wishing to locate a chaplain or desiring reading materials. Dr. Persons (continued from page one) A native of Ft. Flagler, Wash., Dr. Persons was a graduate of Ohio State University in Columbus and the Harvard Medical School. He served an internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston before coming to Duke. In 1932 he married Helen Hopkinson Coles of Summit, N.J., who survives. They were the parents of two daughters, Mrs. Richard Edgar (Mary Chauncey) of Phoenix, Md., and Susan Lapsley of Durham. Dr. Persons is also survived by three grandchildren. A memorial service was held at the Duke Chapel November 27 with Dr. James T. Cleland,dean of the Chapel, and the Rev. Albert A. Nelius officiating. An Elbert L. Persons Memorial Fund has been set up through the Duke Depart ment of Medicine. Dr. Markee (continued from page one) He was an honorary member of many medical societies and was recipient of Duke Medical School's Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching in 1963. Dr. Markee is survived by his wife, Myrtle Clapp Markee, and two children. Dr. Shirley Markee of New York City and Dr. Joseph E. Markee, Jr., stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii with the U. S. Army. A Joseph E. Markee Memorial Fund has been established through the Office of the Vice President for Health Affairs.
