Holiday Goodies Professional News POOR MAN'S FRUIT CAKE Cream together; 1 cup sugar % cup shortening Add three eggs. Place one cup buttermilk and IV2 teaspoons baking soda in small bowl and set aside. Measure out three cups of flour. Alternate adding flour, then milk, then flour, etc., to the mixture until all are combined. Then add one 8 oz. package of chopped dates, 1 cup chopped nuts, and the grated rind of one orange. Spoon mixture into greased tube or Bundt pan and bake at 350 degrees for about one hour. (Test for doneness with toothpick.) While cake is still warm, pour over a glaze made of V2 cup sugar, the grated rind of one orange, and the juice of two oranges. CHOCOLATE FUDGE Put together in a large bowl and let stand until room temperature: % lb. butter 1 9-oz jar marshmallow creme 3 6-oz pkgs. chocolate bits 2 tsp. vanilla Heat in large pan and boil for 13 minutes: I can evaporated milk 4’^ cups sugar Pour sugar-milk mixture into other ingredients and stir until everything is blended. Add I cup chopped nuts if desired. Pour into greased pan and refrigerate. Duke Professor and chief of the division of dermatology, was elected president of the American Academy of Dermatology at the group's annual meeting in Chicago last week. Dr. Callaway, who earned his M.D. from Duke, has been chief of dermatology since 1937. Gets Grant Dr. David J. Lang, associate professor of pediatrics, has received a $23,500 grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development for a study on "Persistent Congenital and Neonatal Viral Infections." Gives Paper Dr. Edward Clifford, associate professor of psychiatry, gave a paper titled "Cleft Palate and the Person: Psychological Studies of Impact" at the annual meeting of the Southern Medical Association In Dallas last month. Presents Paper Dr. Joan C. Martin, assistant professor of medical psychology, gave a paper at the annual meeting of the Psychonomic Society November 5-7 in San Antonio, Tex. Guest Speaker Dr. Frank H. Bassett, 111, associate professor of orthopaedic surgery, was guest speaker at the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Association meeting recently. Dr. Bassett also presented a paper with Dr. John P. Tindall of the Department of Dermatology on "Blastomycosis of Bone" at the Southern Medical Association meeting in Dallas in November. At Meeting Dr. Erdman Palmore, associate professor of medical sociology, presented two papers at the annual meeting of the Gerontological Society in Toronto, Canada, in October. They were on "Factors Related to_ Needs Among the Aged Poor" and "Changes in Medical Care Utilization Since Medicare Among the Aged." Present Papers Martin Schwartz, a Duke MD-PhD student, presented a paper titled "A Simple, Definitive Assay for Factor XII (FSF) Deficiency" at the 43rd annual meeting of the Central Society for Cliniclal Research In Chicago early last month. At the same meeting. Dr. Gary Shapiro, who is working in biochemical research with Dr. Patrick McKee, presented a paper on "Demonstration of a Non-Functional Anti-Hemophilic Factor (Factor VIII) in Classic Hemophilia." At State Meeting Three Duke physicians addressed sessions at the North Carolina Academy of General Practice annual scientific assembly and business meeting recently In Raleigh. On the program were Dr. John P. Tindall, associate professor of dermatology. Dr. Samuel M. McMahon, assistant professor of medicine and director of the Respiratory Care Unit, and Dr. Hans Lowenbach, professor of psychiatry. Present Papers Dr. John Reckless, chief of the division of psychosomatic medicine in the Department of Psychiatry, presented a paper on "The Deconditioning of Bronchial Asthma: A Modified Group Therapy Situation" November 16 at the meeting of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine in Bermuda last month. Presenting a paper titled "Racial Differences in Hypertension: A Study of the Effect of Interpersonal Stress on Anger, Aggression, and Vascular Arousal for Negroes and Whites" at the same nroetlng was Dr. W. Doyle Gentry, psychophysiologlcal psychologist in the division. Duke Gives Fair Share During this Christmas season, when everyone is stretching his dollars to buy presents for family and friends. Medical Center employes reached out to help those less fortunate by donating nearly $34,000 to the Durham United Fund campaign. The Medical Center's total of $33,802.70 is more than $1,600 over last year's figure of $32,188.83. It represents 43 per cent of the $79,061.94 collected for the United Fund throughout the University. Paul Vick, director of special events and one of Duke UF coordinator Vic Bubas' assistants, said fund officials are still hopeful that Duke will reach its goal of $81,102 before final figures are totaled. Mr. Bubas cited James L. Bennett, Jr., administrative assistant to the vice president for health affairs, for his "great job" in directing the United Fund drive at the Medical Center.
