MORE ROOM TO PLAY —The newly renovated and enlarged pediatric playroom is
put to good use by these four kids from Howland and Matas wards. The playroom
underwent about $2,500 worth of modernizing recently and expanded into the former
pediatric waiting room. Duke's pediatric recreation program is under the direction of
therapist Miss Sally Francis. The children, from left to right, are Bonnie Bradley,

Nursing staffs in general at Duke
Hospital are known for taking more than
the usual interest in patients, and the
staff on Long Ward has demonstrated it.
It all started when Leroy Yellock, a
22-year-old man from Roxboro, checked
into the Hospital a few weeks ago. Mr.
Yellock had previously lost the use of all
four limbs following an automobile
accident.
The staff soon discovered that the
Yellock household had been destroyed by
fire a few months ago and the family had
lost nearly all of its possessions.
That's when the nurses, patient care
assistants, ward clerks, and just about
everyone else associated with Long Ward
really went to work.
• They donated more than eight boxes
of clothing for the entire family in
addition to a number of household
furnishings. Then some of the dietetics
employes on the second-floor tray unit
down the hall from Long Ward heard
about the Yellocks and collected some
other items for the family.
When they learned the borrowed stove
the Yellock family was using had to be
returned, the Long staff contacted a local
appliance dealer who donated an electric
range to the family.
Miss Marion Gordon, PGA on Long,
added that interested Duke employes are
now trying to obtain a refrigerator and
washing machine for the Yellocks.
The whole staff echoed her words:
"Leroy is just a wonderful patient, and
we all wanted to do whatever we could to
make things better for him and his
family."
