1 IMIaMB! ntGRCom duke uniycusity ccnfett VOLUME 18, NUMBER 19 MAY 21, 1971 DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA -1' j t NEW CHILD AT SCHOOL—Students at Duke's Acoustic Nursery get their first look at a life-size "talking doll" presented to the nursery last week by the Raleigh council of the North Carolina chapter of the Telephone Pioneers of America. A wireless radio transmitting and receiving system has been installed inside the doll so that speech therapists can communicate with a child while remaining out of sight. Therapists hope that some children who will not talk with an adult in person will want to converse with the doll. The Telephone Pioneers is a group of men and women employed by Southern Bell for at least 21 years. Nursery students pictured from left to right are Darin Baines, Sheria Elam, and Mike Wilson. Seated behind the children is Mrs. Jill Wilson and holding the doll is Mrs. Pam Wolfe. Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Wolfe are members of the nursery staff, (photo by Lewis Parrish) Dr. Kenan Fills New Duke Post Vice President William G. Aniyan has named Dr. Patrick Kenan his assistant for community affairs. Dr. Kenan, an associate professor of otolaryngology, will serve as the Medical Center's liaison with community hospitals and other medical and health organizations in programs of mutual interest. The appointment was recently approved by the Duke Board of Trustees. "The health care resources available to the people of Durham and Durham County are among the finest to be found in any comparable-size area in the country," Dr. Aniyan said. "Because of this, and because of Duke's interest in contributing to the future development and best possible use of our combined resources," he said, "I asked Dr. Kenan to devote a major part of his time to working with other health care planners in the community." Dr. Kenan, a native of Oklahoma, received his M.D. degree at Duke in 1959. He served his internship at Watts Hospital in Durham and his residency at Duke and at the VA Hospital. For five years. Dr. Kenan was secretary-treasurer of the Durham-Orange County Medical Society, and he has continued activities in local civic and church affairs. Health Forum Begins Here Approximately 150 men and women associated with the fields of hospital administration and health care from throughout the United States and Canada are here for Duke's annual National Forum on Hospital and Health Affairs. The two-day conference began today in Zener Auditorium of the Sociology-Psychology Building. The forum topic—"Realigning the Health Care Delivery System"—will be approached from the subject points of health maintenance organizations (HMO's), health care corporations, medical care foundations, the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, the Health Insurance Plan of Greater New York and group health cooperatives. These six patterns have attracted the stroggest support nationally and represent the basic differences in approach to and sponsorship of health care delivery. The National Forum, conducted by Duke's Graduate Program in Hospital Administration and supported by the Duke Endowment, was started in 1965. Faculty members for this year's sessions are: James Brindle, president of the Health Insurance Plan of Greater New York; Dr. Madison B. Brown, deputy director of the American Hospital Association; Ray E. Brown, formerly of Duke and now executive vice president of Northwestern University—McGaw Medical Center. Dr. Paul M. Ellwood, executive director of the American Rehabilitation Foundation in Minneapolis; Scott Fleming of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Oakland, Calif.; Charles H. Frenzel, director of Duke's Graduate Program in Hospital Administration; Dr. Donald C. Harrington, medical director of the San Joaquin Medical Foundation in Stockton, Calif.; Dr. Harold F. Newman, director of the Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound in Seattle, Wash.
