Med Technology Class Completes Year’s Program

Twenty-three new medical
technologists were welcomed into the
profession June 26 at graduation
ceremonies for Duke's School of Medical
Technology.
The 22 women and one man heard Dr.
Thomas D. Kinney, director of medical
and allied health education, deliver the
commencement address on the future of
medical care.
The graduates, 13 of vvhom have taken
jobs in North Carolina, completed a
12-month program of course work and
clinical training in laboratories
throughout the Medical Center and at the
Durham VA Hospital.
In order to enter the program the
students were required to have three or
four years of college work with emphasis
on science courses. Many received degrees
from their own colleges upon completion
of the Duke program.
Named valedictorian of the class was
Diane Marie Shupp of Stroudsburg, Pa.
Other students recognized for
Four Professors Appointed
Duke Provost Dr. John O. Blackburn
has announced the names of four new full
professors at the Medical Center—three in
the Department of Psychiatry and the
other in the Department of
Biochemistry-Genetics.
Drs. Frederick Nine, Larry W.
Thompson, and Adriaan Verwoerdt were
named professors of psychiatry while Dr.
Irwin Fridovich was promoted to
professor of biochemistry.
Dr. Hine, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio,
took his pre-medical studies at Yale
University and received his M. D. degree
from the Yale School of Medicine in
1949. He did his postgraduate study at
Tulane University School of Medicine and
stayed on the staff there until 1959 when
)he joined the Duke faculty as an assistant
professor.
Dr. Hine was promoted to associate
professor in 1963.
Dr. Thompson has been on the Duke
staff since 1961 and was appointed
assistant professor of medical psychology
in 1962. He was promoted to associate
professor in 1967 and is currently
supervising interns in medical psychology
at Duke. He is a graduate of George
Washington University and received both
M.A. and Ph. D. degrees from Florida
State University in 1958 and 1961,
respectively.
A native of the Netherlands, Dr.
Verwoerdt earned his medical degree
from the University of Amsterdam in
1952 and came to Duke to serve a
residency in psychiatry in 1954. He was
named an associate in the department in
1962 and was promoted to assistant
professor in 1963. He became an
associate professor in 1967 and last year
was named director of training and

outstanding academic achievement were
Janet Agnes Fick of Stanhope, N. J.,
Linda Lee Horne of Roanoke, Va., and
Nancy Lee Nichols of Walton, N. Y.
Class President Katharine Gully of
Lubbock, Tex., announced that the
students were presenting a check to the
Edgemont Community Clinic as their
class gift.
Dr. Roger J. Bulger, associate director
of medical education for allied health,
gave the welcoming address to the more
than 100 parents and friends attending
the ceremonies.
Presenting the Duke pins and
graduation certificates were Dr. Bruce M.
Schlein, associate director of the school;
Mary S. Britt, registrar and teaching
supervisor; and M. Linda Garriss, assistant'
registrar and instructor.
In addition to Misses Shupp, Fick,‘
Horne, Nichols, and Gully, the new
graduates included the following:
