Grzelecki, Klima Appointed
Two New Assistant Directors at Work
MR. GRZELECKI
MR. KLIMA
New Aging Program Announced This Week
OARS has come to Duke.
OARS, officially called the Older
Americans' Resources and Services
Program, has been established at Duke
under a grant from the government
Administration on Aging to provide more
services for the elderly.
The program, announced this week by
U. S. Commissioner on Aging John B.
Martin at a talk here, will operate as part
of Duke's Center for the Study of Aging
and Human Development.
Dr. Carl Eisdorfer, professor of
psychiatry and director of the center,
explained that underlying the program is
the philosophy that many factors
contribute to an individual's adaptation
to later life and that assistance at critical
times may help prevent the development
of more serious problems.
"Accordingly,” Dr. Eisdorfer
explained, "the new program will seek to
develop a variety of services to help
persons remain active in the community,
including social work services, psychiatric
and psychological counseling, pastoral
care, and referral to legal and financial
resources, as well as services to the
home."
Dr. Eric Pfeiffer, associate professor of
psychiatry, will head the project, and Dr.
Eisdorfer and Dr. George Maddox,
program director for the center, will be
the principal investigators.
Other members of the OARS team
include Dr. Daniel Peak, administrator of
the Duke Information and Counseling
Service for Older Persons upon which
OARS will build, and Mrs. Carol Pauk,
who will serve as project coordinator.
Duke Hospital has named two new
assistant directors.
Appointed were Alfred J. Grzelecki,
now responsible for a number of service
departments within the Hospital, and
Dennis E. Klima, who takes
administrative responsibility for the
construction and development of systems
for Duke's new $3.7 million Eye Center.
Both appointments, finalized late last
month, were announced by Associate
Hospital Director Richard H. Peck.
Mr. Grzelecki, a 1967 graduate of
Duke's master's degree program in
hospital administration, comes back to
Duke from four years with the U. S. Air
Force Medical Service Corps. He served in
several positions including assistant
administrator for resources management
at the 401 Tactical Hospital, a 115-bed
regional medical center in Madrid, Spain.
A native of Schenectady, N. Y., Mr.
Grzelecki earned a B. A. degree in
economics from Colby College in
Waterviile, Me., in 1965. He is married
to the former Margaret Baker of Brevard,
N. C., and they are the parents of a
daughter, Ann Sheaffer.
His areas of responsibility include
central supply, dietetics, pharmacy,
equipment room, purchasing, and the
storeroom.
Mr. Klima, who was on the Duke staff
for several month,s following his
graduation from the Duke HA program in
1968, also comes back to Duke from the
service.
He recently completed three years of
active duty with the Health Care
Administration Section of the U. S.
Navy's Medical Service Corps. He served
at both Bethesda Naval Hospital in
Maryland and with the Bureau of
Medicine and Surgery in \Afeshington, D.C.
