Presents Lecture
24 Students Begin H.A. Program
Twenty-four new students arrived at
the Medical Center June 12 to begin
Duke's two-year Graduate Program in
Hospital Administration.
Following three days of orientation,
the students began working as ward clerks
on the major units in the Hospital. The-
two-month clerkship, coordinated by
Unit Administrator Ted Badger, serves to
familiarize the students with daily
operations in a general hospital.
In addition to their ward clerk duties,
the students will be taking an
introductory course in hospital
administration during the summer
months.

Dr. William W. Johnston,
associate professor of
pathology, presented the
Ortho Lecture, in Cytology at
the meeting of the Canadian
Society of Cytology in
Sherbrooke, Quebec on June
19.
The lecture is given
annually by a researcher
whom the Society recognizes
as a valuable contributor in
the field of cytology.
Participants
Nancy Burris, supervisor of the neurosurgical
unit and recovery room, and Patricia Parker,
head nurse of the neurosurgical unit, attended
the American Association of Neurosurgical
Nurses Convention in Boston, Mass.
Presents Paper
Dr. Charles Lanning, resident in
anesthesiology, presented a paper on
"Cardiovascular and Blood Gas Alterations
Associated with the Use of Methylmethacrylate
Cement" at the Southeastern Residents Meeting
in Charlottesville, Va., June 5-7.
Named
William R. Zuercher, a 1968 graduate'of the
graduate program in hospital administration,
has been named administrator and chief
executive officer of the Appalachian Regional
Hospitals' Harlan, Ky. Community Health
Center.
Appointed
Dr. John Laszio, professor of medicine, was
appointed chairman of the National Institute's
of Health study section on pharmacology for
the National Cancer Institute for 1972-74.
Aniyan Speaks
In Netherlands
Dr. William G. Aniyan has been in The
Hague, the Netherlands, this week as a
participant in an international conference
sponsored by the Josiah Macy, Jr.
Foundation on "National Health
Services: Their Impact on Medical
Education and Their Role in Prevention."
Dr. Aniyan, vice president for health
affairs, addressed the conference
Wednesday, speaking on "Current
Curricular Changes in the Continuum of
Medical Education."
Other speakers in the
Monday-Thursday conference were from
Great Britain, Israel, Norway, Yugoslavia,
New Zealand, Sweden, the People's
Republic of China, Denmark and Spain,
as well as the United States.
Enroute to The Hague, Dr. Aniyan
stopped in London for discussions on the
impact of national health insurance there
on medical schools. Following The Hague
conference, he traveled to Stockholm,
Sweden, for discussions there today oh
effects of changes in the health-care
system on health education.
