2 Professional News Attends Workshop Diane Gudger, assistant director of physical therapy services, attended a workshop entitled "Basic Review of Upper and Lower Extremity Prosthetics." Address Commencement John B. Cahoon, director of radiologic technology, gave the commencement address for the School of Radiologic Technology at the Columbus Medical Center, Columbus, Ga., cn June 16. Attends Course Pat Bickerstaff, staff physical therapist, and Betsy Denny, associate in physical therapy, attended a short course on neurophysical principles In treatment of adult hemiplegia. The course, given May 11-13, was sponsored by The American Association of Occupational Therapists. Attends Symposium Dr. Daniel C. Tosteson, professor and chairman of the Departnnent of Physiology and Pfiarmacology, delivered a talk and chaired the session of the Second International Symposium on Metatjolism and Membrane Permeability of Erythrocytes, Thrombocytes, and Leukocytes In Vienna, Austria June 14-16. Attends Workshop Martha Ellsvwjrth and Marianne Moore, staff physical therapists, Emy Villanueva, assistant professor of physical therapy, and Bob Federchuck, director of physical therapy services, attended a workshop on evaluation sponsored by the University of North Carolina at Wrightsville Beach May 18-19. Bob Federchuck, Judy Felder, staff physical therapist, and Grace Horton, assistant professor of physical therapy, attended a workshop on the "Development of Self-Instructional Materials" sponsored by the Southern Medical School Consortium May 22-23 in Durham. Examiner Dr. Joseph A. C. Wadsworth, professor and chairman of ophthalmology, is an examiner for the oral portion of the American Board of Ophthalmology examinations. Gives Lecture Russell E. Bland, prosthetist, gave a lecture demonstration on the casting, cast modification and fabrication of the below-knee patella-tendon-bearing, weight bearing brace at at the University of Virginia on May 27. Installed Elizabeth Jones, LPN in the Medical Outpatient Clinic was installed as a member of the board of directors of the North Carolina Licensed Practical Nurses Association, at the group's 25th annual convention held in Durham May 11. Presents Paper Bert R. Titus, director of the Department of Prosthetics and Orthotics, presented a paper on the "Immediate Post Operative Procedure on Upper and Lower Extremity Amputee's at an orthopaedic meeting at the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville May 27. Professor Werner Schafer, director of the Max Planck Institute fUr Virusforschung in Tubingen, Germany, Presents Paper Dr. Kaye H. Kilburn, professor of medicine, presented a paper on "Models for Bronchitis" for the committee on tobacco and health's Bronchitis third research conference of the American Medical Association Research and Education Foundation in Newport Beach, California, May 7-9 . Dr. Kilburn also presented a paper on "Lung Disease Produced by Condensed Vegetable Tannins" at the American Thoracic Society's annual meeting in Kansas City, May 21-24. Selected A paper submitted by Dr. Nicholas G. Georgiade, professor of plastic and maxillofacial surgery, and his research team has been chosen to receive the Prize for the Senior Classification for the best original paper submitted in 1971-72 to the Medical Foundation of the American Society of Plastic Surgery. The paper will be presented and the award received at the annual meeting of the society this fall. The research team consisted of Dr. Elizabeth King and William (Art) Harris, research assistants, and Dr, William M. O'Fallon, assistant professor of mathematics and associate professor of community health sciences, who was bio-statistician for the project. The research centered on the evaluation of the viability of preserved tissues. The investigators utilized a method of assaying viability of skin by means of correlating enzyme activity with various techniques used to freeze skin. came to Duke on June 27 to spend three weeks in Dr. Joseph W. Beard's laboratory in the Department of Surgery. The purpose of his visit is to initiate a collaborative program to study, in detail, the properties of several mammalian tumor virus antigens, including those from two possible human tumor virus candidates. Working with Dr. Schafer are Dr. Dani P. Bolognesi, assistant professor of surgery, and his colleagues, Drs. Robert Green, research associate in biochemistry, and Don Mickey, post-doctoral fellow in microbiology and immunology. Dr. Schafer, an internationally known scientist who has made outstanding contributions in the area of animal virology, has of late concentrated his efforts on the study of immunological properties of RNA tumor viruses. Accompanying Dr. Schafer are his wife Emma and two research assistants Liselotte Pister and Eveline Seifert.
