New Parking Garage Will Open Gates
WHAT IS THAT THROUGH THE TREES?—Unless you're a newcomer to Duke or have dropped completely out of sight for the
past year, you know that it's the Medical Center's new parking garage. They're still putting on some finishing touches, but the
garage will open for business during the coming week. One stairwell leading to the second and third decks, on the Baker House side
of the garage, will be glass-enclosed and will house an elevator. The stairwell will be sheeted with traditional Duke stone. A stone
and concrete park-like^ area will separate that side of the garage from the street. But more important than that is its function. The
garage holds 1,100 cars, or almost three times as many as could park on the old patient and visitor lot.
The new Medical Center Parking
Garage will open its gates to traffic during
the coming week.
The ground-level and second-level
decks will be open to patients and visitors
during most of the day. However, after
2:15 p.m. each day those two levels will
be open to female employes coming to
work on the second shift so their cars will
be easily accessible from the hospital
when they get off work at night.
From 5:30 p.m. on, those areas will be
open to all Medical Center personnel
whose cars have Medical Center decals.
Persons parking in the garage after
2:15 p.m. or after 5:30 p.m. may park
free of charge if when leaving the garage
they turn into the attendant the parking
garage ticket with their name and decal
number written on the back of the ticket.
This move is to provide close-by
parking space for employes, particularly
women, on the evening and night shifts so
they will not have.to walk a distance in
the dark either coming to or going from
work.
Free parkers must have cleared the lot
by 7:30 a.m. to make way for patients
and visitors.
The third level of the garage is a
monthly pay parking area. Spaces are $10
per month. First priority for renting
spaces goes to persons now renting spaces
in Flowers Drive. Second priority goes to
people now renting spaces in the ravine
gated lot behind Bell Building.
Any spaces left over on the third level
will be offered for rent to anyone at the
Medical Center on a first-come,_
first-served basis.
Anyone wanting to register for any
available spaces on the third deck should
contact Harry Gentry, traffic and parking
manager, Box 3086.
