The Pharmacy Department has recently undergone a major administrative change to enable the department to function on an improved and more efficient basis. Due to the continued growth and higher demands for quality pharmacy services, the department has appointed a second man to the position of assistant director of pharmacy. Donald C. McLeod has been the assistant director since June of 1971 and has aided in the establishment of the new program of unit dose dispensing. The growth of the "unit dose" system has necessitated greater supervision in the areas of special dosage preparation, intravenous admixtures and overall pharmaceutical purchasing. Also, much emphasis is being placed on disseminating quality drug information and on providing educational services in the department. Thus, McLeod, as assistant director, is presently responsible for the management of all education and drug information activities in the department. Among his many duties, he is the editor of a publication entitled "Clinical Drug Abstracts," which is concerned with drug information, and he has contributed much work toward the compilation of the current hospital formulary. He also edits a column in the journal Drug Intelligence and Clinical Pharmacy entitled "Drug Evaluation Data." Clyde Buchanan has been promoted from chief of inpatient pharmacy services to the second assistant director position. He is in charge of central dispensing, pharmacy purchasing, pharmacy production, intranveous admixtures, and the unit dose drug distribution system. Due to a complete remodeling of the central pharmacy, the unit dose dispensing has become more centralized and the department, under the supervision of Buchanan, is now better equipped to serve more wards with unit dose. A native of Kinston, Buchanan received his B.S. degree in pharmacy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1969 and obtained his M.S. degree in hospital pharmacy from Ohio State University. McLeod, of Norman, received both his B.S. and M.S. degrees in pharmacy from the University of North Carolina and (continued on page 4) INTERCOM is published weekly for Duke University Medical Center employes, faculty, staff, students, and friends by the Medical Center Public Relations Office, Joe Sigler, director.
