Office of Public Relations P. O. Box 3354 Duke University Medical Center Durhann, North Carolina '1HI5 A snewpd' Trading Post NCPA Begins Under the leadership of Mrs. Leslie C. Gale, physician's associate in Rehabilitation and Surgery, Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit, Duke University Medical Center, plans are underway for the organization of a local chapter of the North Carolina Paraplegic Association in the Triangle Area (Raleigh-Durham- Chapel Hill). Grady R. Galloway, special projects assistant of the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation on the state office staff, and chairman of the Architectural Barriers Committee of the North Carolina Rehabilitation Association, was guest speaker for the group's first meeting. As pointed out by Mrs. Gale, membership is open to all interested persons — non-handicapped as well as ■those with specific problems, such as paraplegic, blindness, arthritis, etc. Following are the principal goals of the chapter: To establish a mutual-aid group to share experiences and help the newly handicapped adjust to a new life, etc. To provide for a collective voice in requesting from city, state, or national government recognition of the handicapped as capable persons, despite their handicaps, and for a collective power in urging the removal of architectural barriers, employment of handicapped persons, and better medical care for all. To provide a center of communication — a lending library of literature concerning handicaps, which will assist members, families, and friends. It is inevitable that the chapter will make a positive contribution toward improvement of services to handicapped residents of the area. There are many challenges open to the group. Anyone interested in joining, or who has ideas and suggestions to offer, should contact Mrs. Gale at Box 2914, Duke Medical Center, Durham, N.C. 27710, Telephone 383-5227, or at 383-5223 in Durham after 6:00 p.m. History of ESP The Josiah C.
