Vehicle Registration To Begin
Monday, August 20
Vehicle registration for the 1973-74
year will begin on Monday, but the day
you register and the place you register
will depend on where you work.
Harry Gentry, director of the Parking
and Traffic Office, said that instead of
having a central point for registration this
year, registration will be conducted by
building for greater convenience to
medical center employes.
All current decals expire Aug. 31.
Full-time and part-time employes and
students must acquire new decals and
have them on their vehicles by Sept. 1 to
park legally on campus.
Gentry said that in an effort to avoid
problems resulting from lost or stolen
decals, the university this year will begin
using window decals. They are to be
placed in the right corner (passenger side)
of the rear window.
The annual registration fee will again
be $10 if paid in cash or by check. If
payroll deduction is used, the fee will be
$12. Motorcycle registration fee is $5.
The $10 registration fee is included in
the cost for persons who pay for reserved
parking spaces. The reserved parking
space decals also must be renewed at the
time of vehicle registration.
Here are the things you need to take
with you when you register:
* Your driver's license.
* Your vehicle registration card.
* Your Social Security number.
* The name of your automobile
insurance company.

HOSPITAL AND ADJOINING
BUILDINGS — Monday, Aug. 20,
through Wednesday, Aug. 22, from 8:30
a.m.-4:30 p.m. and from 7 p.m.-l a.m., in
the basement corridor outside Medical
Records (Yellow Zone).
NANALINE H. DUKE BUILDING -
Thursday, Aug. 23, from 8:30-11 a.m., in
the first floor main entrance area.
"The thing that struck me most was how poor the country was.
You take everything they have and divide it equally into 700
million parts and each person has very little."
That's the way Dr. Eugene Stead Jr., professor of medicine,
describes his main impression of mainland China. Stead and his
wife Evelyn returned in July from a three-week tour sponsored by
the National Academy of Sciences.
Before a standing-room-only crowd at
Grand Rounds recently. Stead described
his 35,000-mile odyssey through the
cities, hospitals and rural communes of
eastern China. His topics ranged from the
thoughts of Chairman Mao to women's
liberation and acupuncture.
"The atmosphere in China is
something we're not even aware of in this
country," Stead said. "There is no
separation between daily living and
politics, no separation between health
and politics.
"The country has a degree of equality
not envisioned by any of us before we
went," he said. "The people are
encouraged at all levels to participate in
decision-making. But one never does
anything just for himself.
"Of all the medical students we talked
to, we never got any one to say he was
doing anything because of his own
personal desire. He was doing what is best

CAROWINDS COUPONS
The Employe Relations Office has
obtained a supply of discount coupons
which are good for a 50-cent reduction in
the admission price to Carowinds, the
new family recreation center near
Charlotte.
Information may be obtained from
that office, at 2106 Campus Drive, or by
calling Ext. 6513.

Stead said that this might mean going
on through medical school to specialized
training, or stopping at a certain level of
training and going out in the country
where he was needed.
"The general concepts on which the
Duke curriculum is planned would never
fit there—the idea of what will help the
individual prepare for the course he wants
to pursue," he said.
Intellectuals and scientists continually
have at their elbows representatives of the
Communist party who examine the
direction their work is taking and whether
it fits in with society's aims, he said.
Everyone in Chinese society must keep
in touch with the life of the people, he
said. Medical students must spend
one-third of their time with the peasants.
The tour members saw Shanghai office
workers out repairing the roads and
pupils from the middle schools out in the
fields helping to bring in the harvests.
"The system was more open and
decentralized than I would have
imagined," he said. There is room to
work and plan for better things he said,
but only if they are going to benefit a
