Nursing School Names New
Academic Programs Director
Three Duke researchers
traveled to Copenhagen,
Denmark, Aug. 26 through 31 •
to participate in the Second ^
International Cleft Lip Palate ^
Congress. Dr. Galen W. Quinn, ^
professor of orthodontics,
presented a paper entitled
"Rapid Presurgical Retraction
of the Premaxilla."
Dr. Raymond Massengill Jr., associate
professor and speech pathologist for the Duke
cleft palate team, presented a paper and a film
about speech problems related to the cleft lip
palate individual. Dr. Edward Clifford, associate
professor of both medical psychology and
surgery, participated in a symposium on the
psychological aspect in the treatment of cleft
lip palate individuals.
Earlier in August, Quinn presented a paper
entitled "Orthodontfc Treatment for the Cleft
Palate Child" at the Third International
Qrthodontic Congress in London.

J. Edward King, manager of the Central
Teaching Facility, presided at the annual
workshop of the Association for Multidiscipline
Education in the Health Sciences. June 11-15,
in Storrs, Conn. Dr. Helen J. Gillikin, assistant
manager of the Central Teaching Facility, also
attended.

Lillian McDaniels, Anne Brown, Bradley
Lewis and Mary Carpenter of the Psychiatric
Unit were participants in a workshop entitled
"After Hell — Then What?" at the NCSNA
Psychiatric Mental Health Conference. The
conference was held in Reidsville, N.C. in May.

LPN Richard C. Butler of the Rehabilitation
Unit attended the National Paraplegia
Foundation workshop on "Developing
Programs of Sexuality with the Spinal Cord
Injured" held in Indianapolis, Ind., June 20-23.
Dr. Ada F. Most has recently been
appointed director of academic programs
and associate professor in the School of
Nursing.
Born in Vienna, Austria, Dr. Most
spent her childhood in Jerusalem where
she obtained a diploma from the Henrieta
Szold — Hadassah School of Nursing in
1956. -
From 1958 to 1969 she attended
Columbia University Teachers College
and received her B.S., M.A., Ed.M. and
Ed.D. degrees. While in New York
completing her degrees, she was an
instructor at the Englewood Hospital
School of Nursing in New Jersey and St.
Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in New
York City.
Prior to her arrival at Duke, Dr. Most
was an associate professor at the
UR. ADA MOST
University of Texas School of Nursing in
Austin.
In her new position at the School of
Nursing, Dr. Most's responsibilities will be
enlarged to include the development of
programs other than the current ones on
the undergraduate level. She will also
assume overall responsibility for the
implementation and evaluation of the
recently revised undergraduate
curriculum and assist faculty in exploring
the possible development of graduate and
continuing education programs.
Aside from her new responsibilities,
Dr. Most enjoys folk dancing and square
dancing, she plays the piano and
accordian, and is fluent in Hebrew and
German. She has two children who will
be attending school in Durham. Her
husband is an assistant professor at the
University of Texas School of
Engineering In Austin.

Reginald Compton was married to Leslie
Self in Raleigh in the spring . . . . Reginald
Compton is a new employe and Melody
Faircloth transferred from the Dept, of
Surgery.

Durham Rehabilitation Unit
RN Rae H. Schmuck, a student at
UNC-Chapel Hill, is serving as relief staff nurse
on night duty at the IRU .... Constance
Edgerton (formerly on Rankin) and Lizzie Kee
(formerly on Long) transferred to the IRU
nursing staff following their graduation from
NCCU where they received the B.S. in Nursing

Secretary Brenda Sergent and her husband
Clint announce the birth of their daughter Cora
Lee Anne on August 20 ... . Clerk-typist
Alberta Massey and her husband announce the
birth of their son Marcus Marcellus on August 8
the clinic employes said they have enjoyed
having trainees Betty Han-is and Celestine Cash
for five weeks of on-the-job training as
clerk-typists.

Welch Ward
Nellie Hatley and her children wish to^thank
everyor>e on Welch foi^ their kindness during the
illness of her husband Howard. Mrs. Hatley
mentioned specifically the ward nurses, the
private duty nurses, the I.V. team, Drs. Kramer,
Silbermari, Anderson, McLeod and Cavanaugh,
the nursing office employes, public safety
officers and the parking lot cashiers. She said,
"It's a great feeling to know that one works
with people like them."
