Reporter; Cynthia McCaskill Monthly Bhod Drive Honors Nursing Student^ Manager The fourth medical center Red Cross Blood Drive, held on Oct. 30, resulted in the collection of 153 pints of blood, far exceeding an expected goal of 100 pints. The October drive produced the largest amount of contributors to date. During the past four months, 454 pints of blood have been collected and the drive, which is to continue for one full year, is running well ahead of its anticipated goal of 1,200 pints. Two of the people who were instrumental in making the drive so successful were Margaret Tipping, a senior in charge of the drive at the School of Nursing, and Lewis Capps, a manager in Environmental Services. These two individuals, who received certificates for outstanding contribution to the Oct. 30 drive from Frank Braden, medical unit administrator and coordinator of the Blood Drive, had recruited the largest percentage of blood donors from their particular areas. Ms. Tipping, along with representatives from each class in the School of Nursing, held an incentive contest for the drive-a keg of beer for the class which contributed the largest number of pints. The Class of '76 (sophomore class) won. The story behind Lewis Capps'success is somewhat different. The day before the blood drive, Capps, along with Braden, held a demonstration session for environmental services employes. The purpose of the demonstration was to show employes how easy and painless it is to give blood. During the session, Capps, in ajsupine position, donated a pint of blood, then after resting for a required amount of time, he jumped up and danced a jPg, and set the minds of his co-workers at ease. As a result of the demonstration, the following day, 40 per cent of Capps' department donated blood. Aside from the School of Nursing and Environmental Services, Braden also noted that the Blood Gas Labratory played a large role in making the drive so successful.
