COFFEE, CANDY AND CONVERSATION—Maty Fendt, director of the House Staff
Office, offers these as well as numerous official services to members of the house
staff like Dr. Richard Zaino. Established in 1970, the office is one of the few in the
country that coordinates house staff information and services at a teaching hospital.

Reporter, Duke West
Duke West celebrated its first
birthday on Jan. 5.
A surprise reception for the
administrative personnel was held in
appreciation for the work done in
operating the new unit for the first
year. Honored were Dr. Frank
Clippinger, medical director; Ellen
Hale, nursing supervisor; David
Wessner, unit administrator; and Gy
Rodio, assistant administrative
director of the hospital with
responsibility for Duke West.
Special guests included Wilma
Minniear, director of nursing, and
Richard Peck, administrative
director of the hospital.
The nurses at Duke West
sponsored the celebration which was
attended by the staff from both Duke
West and the Durham Rehabilitation
Center, who have worked closely
together with Duke patients.
Hospital employees from the
pharmacy, lab, nursing and SPDC
also attended.
The reception provided a way to
say "thank you" to the people
involved in the collective effort
necessary to operate a satellite unit.
