Page 2 a(tdrca^ Choose The Right Person In the upcoming Student Government elections, it will be up to each and every individual student to elect people who will best serve the student body. As a rule it should be clear to each person that pop ularity alone does not necessarily make the best officers. To the students running for an S. G. A. office, it should be extremely clear that initiative, leadership, and participation are required. During this past year the Student Government was considerably lacking in these requirements. There have been some meetings where very few members came. If you cannot attend a majority of the meetings, why run for an office? This is one thing that should be known by you, the voters. You have been around these people who will run for office. Be rational in your choice and by doing so you might find that the person does not deserve the of fice for which he is running. If you think the candidate does measure *up to the task, then vote for him by all means. * u ^ These persons elected should serve the student bociy to the utmost of their ability. To repeat briefly, you the voters have the job to elect the best officers. You who are elected should up hold yourself and your position by hard work. March, 1967 T SGA ELecriOM3 C.R. Poll Reveals SGA Shortcomings With the upcoming SGA elections “just around the corner,” roving RAM’S HORN reporter Mike Stophel proached several students and faculty members for their opinion regarding the SGA at Southeastern. The following are some of their comments. Vivi Oxendine: It is good to have them represent the school and make decisions concerning the running of our school. Jim Foyles: The Student Government is bad because it does not repre^-ent the students. The students never know what is going on. Jane Minard: It is as good as it can be until we get some help from the faculty, administration, and students. Eddie Jones: It is good but the students show no in terest and so it is not as effective as it could be. Students should be interested because it gives them a chance to voice their opinions. It will be a good organization when the students fully participate. Bill Love: Do away with it and set up a social coun- cil. Ronnie Barden; What student government? We should start all over again. The whole structure needs re vising. Joe Nance: Do we have one? Elliot Gifford: The idea is good but it hasn’t worked out. We need more student participation. Mr. McGraw: What Student Government? Phil Williamson: There is very little interest shown in our Student government. There are few members and irregular attendance. The President and two advisors were the only ones present at the last meeting. The same people are called on to do and accept the offer to do the jobs. These people get tired of being the only ones who work. Last of all, there seems to be little interest in the upcoming election. iBe'f ^aisnorri Official student newspaper of Southeastern Community College, liox 151. WhIteTlIle, Xorth Carolina. Since Phi Theta Kap pa is a junior college national honor fraternity, it was a sig nificant event. Why then did so few people turn out to see four people be honored by induction? It was very disheartening to the old and new members to find that so few were interested. Phi Theta Kappa is a credit to our school. Its aim is to promote scholastic achievement. Isn’t this important to the students and faculty? The poor turnout for the induction makes this Phi Theta Kappa member wonder. PHt THETA kappa IS A CREDIT TO OUR COLLEGE SO LET’S TREAT IT LIKE IT SHOULD BE TREATED- WITH INTEREST, AND PRIDE. Southeastern Community Col lege has been in operation for al most two years, why then are we so far behind in school spirit? The Commanity Concert series sponsored by the S.G.A. has suf fered from a case of poor at tendance. Our basketball games have the same problem. Is the school wasting money on these events? One certainly gets that impression from the lack of sup port these functions receive. The freshman class was sup posed to organize but didn’t. Why? Is It because the stu dent s would rather complain than get busy and do something about these important issues? A college in operation two years should have more activities than Southeastern presently does. SOUTHEASTERN COMMUN ITY COLLEGE STUDENTS ARE YOU APATHETIC, SCARED TO SPEAK OUT, OR JUST PLAIN LAZY?
