C, NOVEMBER, 1967 Miss America Arrives In Whiteville For Exposition Debra Dene Barnes, Miss America of 1968 arrived In Whiteville Thursday November 9 to participate in the 3rd annual Merchant-Farmer Exposition. At a press conference held Friday afternoon at the Heritage Inn in Whiteville Miss Barnes said “I thought about being Miss America when I was a little girl but it seemed very unlikely.” “Having to adjust to contact lens,” Miss Barnes stated, was one of the problems she faced as a serious candidate for Miss America. Prior to her entry in the pageant she wore glasses. Miss Barnes plans to travel about 250,000 miles this year. Traveling does not seem to pre sent many problems to her. “I am given sufficient time to pre pare for each appearance and I wear thp sump r.inthes over and over” Miss Barnes said. She further stated “of course you don’t know that I wear the same costume over and over.” Miss Barnes plans to major in music after her reign as Miss America. She likes the lone haired music and believes one should be careful in his criti cism of the different forms of music. Highli^ting the press con ference was the presentation of a “Key to the City” of white ville by Horace Whitley, mayor. Dick Marney, commissioner of Whiteville presented Miss Barnes with a “special gift” making her an honorary Tar Heel. see Organizes National Chapter Thirteen members of SCC’s faculty have organized a local chapter of the American Asso ciation of university Professors. The Association Is over 50 years old and has 80,000 members representing 1,500 institutions of hi^er learning. Gary Zeller, head of the music department, has been elected President of Southeastern’s chapter. Alfred Roberson of the science department was elected secretary-treasurer. The SCC chapter is the first such group organized at a state supported two year college In North Caro lina. , Mr. Zeller stated that the AAUP is vigorous in the defense of academic standards and the promotion of faculty welfare. Seml-formal will be the type of dress for this dance. This means that the girls may wear either formal or semi-formal gowns. Ann Plgott was elected to the position of secretary. Linda Page of Lake View, S.C. was named treasurer. Six sophomore and six fresh men senators were also elected.
