Page Eight The Rams Horn April, 1969 Golf Compiles 4-1 Record The only bright spot on the sports scene at S.C.C thus far this season is the golf team. Under coach Joe Nance, they have comprised an impressive 4-1 record to date. The Southeasters have chalked up wins against Lenoir Community College, Sandhills Community College, Southport High school, and Whiteville High school, dropping only a match to Taft Prep School of Connecticut. The team is carrying five men this year plus manager Jimmy Burris. The number one man this season is Eddie Gore, Gary Heffner rates number two man, and A1 Brice is number three. Rounding out the roster is Mickey Fortner playing fourth, Tennis Team Rates 0-3 For the first time in S.C.C. history, the Rams are fielding a tennis team this spring. The team is coached by Mr. “Big Al” Roberson, and consists of persons interested in competition tennis. Thus far Southeastern racket wielders have been Brodie Andrews, Linda Eaton, Sandra Sasser, Gordon Watts, David Parker, Bill Love, Al Brice, Harry Foley, John Howarth, Red Ward, and Rick Mason. In three matches this season the Southeastern tennis ream has failed to find a victory. C.M.A. handed them their first loss with a 6-3 decision. The next game for Southeastern was at Lenoir Community College. The match resulted in a heartbreaking loss for S.C.C., 5-4. On Friday, April 4th, the Rams engaged their first four year school as they took a trip to Wilmington College to face the Seahawks. The match proved disasterous to S.C.C., sufferini! a 9-0 trouncing. Next home game for the tennis team will be at the Whiteville country club next Tuesday. The opponent will again be Lenoir Community Collie and fans will have a chance to see Mark Helms perform. Mark was a state champion in his high school days at Goldsboro. The Rams are hopeful of revenging their earlier loss, and optimistic about the chances of doing it. At the beginning of this quarter, a soccer club was found and, receiving financial support tirom the S.G.A. has arranged an impressive schedule for the current campaign. The young, inexperienceo Ram team traveled to Pembroke in guest of victory for the’ opening gama The Braves proved to have both strength and depth as they handed S.C.C. an 11-3 setback. The following Saturday, Southeastern journeyed to Methodist College to pit their strength against another four year school. The end of a hard fought game found the Rams on the short end of the scoring stick. Methodist blanked S.C.C. for a 4-0 victory. Once again victory eluded the S.C.C. soccer players as they egaged Pembroke College on Thursday, April 9th. The Hams drew fi^ blood and the score was knotted 2-2 at the end of the first half. Depth began to tell, however, and Pembroke pulled away in the third quarter to take the game S-4. The Rams next home game is scheduled for Saturday, April 19th, at the Chadbourn field. They will be facing the New Hanover Wildcats, who they defeated 3 times in the fall. with Bobby Daughtery hCiding down the number five spot. Winning is nothing new to the S.C.C. golf team in their two previous seasons of competition the Rams have lost only one match that one at the hands of Sandhill Community College. The golf team have never had a losing season, and are expecting another winner this year. There will be plenty of action next week for the Rams, who have four matches stated. They face Lenior Community College, Sandhills Community College, Coastal Carolina tech. and the University of South Carolina at Florence, which makes for a pretty rugged schedule. Pictur^ is the first edition of the Southeastern college Ram baseball team. From left to right Diamondmen Lose First Southeastern’s baseball debut ended in defeat at the hands of Whiteville High School on Wednesday, April 9th. The Wolfpack scored an unearned run in the first inning and stopped the Rams for the last seven to take the win. Glen Cameron, Whiteville’s hurler, walked to lead off the Whiteville half of the first inning. Cameron stole second, then advanced to third when the throw to the bag went to centerfield. Pitcher Craig Land fielded the next grounder and elected to throw to first base for the put-out. Cameron hustled in from third and beat the throw to home plate. Craig Land pitched excellent ball for the Rams, allowing but one hit in six innings while striking out seven. Steve Brooks pitched the last frame for S.C.C. and set the pack down in order. The Wolfpack also received good mound service from Glenn Cameron, who allowed but 2 hits while fanning 9 Rams. Civitan Sponsors Sports Magazine Publication of an annual sports magazine headed by Red Ward will appear on campus in May. This money making project is sponsored by the Civitan Club. The magazine will feature all of the college sports established this year, pictures of various teams featuring star players, action shots, statistics and the records of all the teams. The magazine will have an average of 20 pages. It will be available to the students for a small fee of 50 cents. Rams Heard I By RICK MASON Sports, sports, and more sports! Yes, we have got a sports program at Southeastern this spring that is making other, less fortunate, schools turn green with envy. But our students aren’t turning anything, including turning out for the games. Seems like a real shame, too, with such an opportunity to display a little school spirit (look it up in Webster if you don’t know what it means). Through the efforts of many people, yes even the efforts of our much denounced S.G.A., Southeastern is providing a chance for many students to participate in sports this spring. True, only the golf team is winning, but that doesn’t keep S.C.C. from facing older, stronger teams with every intention of winning. If this much desire and hustle can be found among sports participants, it would be a pity if the spectators could not find the energy to support them by attending the games. This is the spring soccer club of Southeastern who has just come into existence this year. The front row left to right is Tomerlin, Moffitt, Braswell, Fuller, Seaton, Reece, Foley, Miller; back row: Ward, Cary, Stanaland, Nance, Howarth, and PCTkins.
