RAM’S HORN *‘The Voice of the Student Body** Vol. V, No. 1 Southeastern Community College, Whiteville, N. C. September, 1969 Stevens, Bracey, Butler 1969 SGA Officers :v 1969-70 SGA officers, left to right are, Armelda Bracey, Secretary; O. C. Stevens, President; Sharon Butler, Treasurer. Last May 14, three new officers were elected by the student body to serve for this school year. They are O.C. Stevens, President, Armelda Bracey, Secretary, and Sharon Butler, Treasurer. O.C. Stevens, who served as vice-president last year, says, “It is my hope that students of SCC will become more aware of their role as students and become more involved with this institution by being an active member and not just a fixture.” O.C.’s plans are to make Marine Biology his life work. He intends to get a BS at Atlantic Christian and go on to do graduate work in Florida. His spare time is spent in scuba-diving, cheering at soccer games, and trying to catch that most undomesticated animal named RAMU and teach'him to be the Ram’s mascot. New secretary Armelda Bracey says, “My experiences at SCC have helped me to grow in knowledge and understanding of myself and others. I believe our school has grown tremendously, and that the students have played an important role in its growth. However, I feel that there is much that each student can do to improve himself and the image of the college.” Armelda enrolled here intending to become a medical secretary, but now plans to continue her education by enrolling at Columbia University. She will be majoring in Business Administration there. Most of her spare time has been taken up with the work involved in being secretary of different organizations, including the Phi Theta Kappa Fraternity. She is also interested in art. Sharon Butler, Treasurer, is a busy girl who works in the SPS office here in addition to keeping up with her classes. She says, “The enthusiasm shown in this year’s elections has been great I hope the students continue to show this interest in the SGA for the rest of the year.” Her plans are to transfer to Pembroke, and eventually to become a teacher of business subjects. Sharon , enjoys basketball games, cooking, sewing, music and writing poetry. All three hope to gain and keep the interest of every person in the whole student body, and to make them aware that the SGA is supposed to be government OF the students, BY the students, and FOR the students. They invite the views and ideas of everyone, since they feel that they are trying to represent the whole student body, and therefore need to know something about the opinions you hold on whatever is at issue. Specific plans ready for dis^losure. Vice President And Senators Elected After a week of enthusiastic campaigning the results are in tentatively for the Student Government Association election. James “Hap” Hazzard Jr. won the Vice Preadency. Senators are as follows: College Parallel Sophomores were Mike Small, Brenda Sykes, Brodie Andrew, and John Howarth; Freshmen were Jimmy Singletary and Randy Long. In Technical the Sophomore Senators were Belinda Phillips and Hamp Avant. Freshmen were Jimmy Ray Williams and Cooper Heath. The Vocational Senators elected were Liz Cain and Peggy Lee Norris. As we go to press Brodie Andrew, John Howarth, Belinda Phillips and Hamp Avant are the eligible winning write-in candidates but their confirmation is pending because of technicalities in the Student Government Association Constitution. Also at this writing these four have to be contacted to get their consent that they wiU serve on the SGA Senate. The student turnout at the polls was dose to a 500% increase over last year’s. At the spring election only 73 students registered to vote compared to 359 who registered for this election. Although there was a large increase in the turnout it was not what the SGA was hoping There are approximately 1024 students enrolled in all of Southeastems programs. It was estimated that at least 800 of these would have been on campus during the time the polls ^ere opened and could have the 359 registered voters - 258 were college parallel students. This represents about 50% of all college parallel. Out of an estimated 150 Vocational Students only 27 voted, and for technical only 84 voted out of a possible 314. r- I 1969-70 SGA Senators pictured here are: Jimmy Singletary, Mike Small, Brodie Andrew, Jimmie Williams, Peggy Lee Norris, Liz Cain, Brenda Sykes. Not pictured are Hap Hazzard, Vice President; Randy Long, Senator. The voting started off slowly reaching its peak between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. The majority of voting students had voted by early afternoon, with only a few coming in after that. The polls closed at 4 p.m. and the balloting started. Due to the constitutional technicalities which are not yet straightened out the tallying of votes took longer than expected. The installation of the new vice president and the senators will be at the next SGA meeting to be held. SGA president O.C. Stevens encourages all students to attend aU SGA meeting. YOU are the Student Government and your attendance is needed and wanted. To have an effective SGA YOU must speak up. All participating candidates are to be commended in their interest in SCC and in the SGA.
