Extramural Champs
with the slow start on the
intramural sports this fall
one would think the niiole
idea of intramurals would
have vanished, but through
the efforts of Mr. Bob Young
and some interested students
the programs survived and
turned out to be some what
rewarding.
On November 9, 1972, the
first annual Extramural
Tournament was held in'
Goldsboro, at Wayne Com
munity College. The event
was designed to b-ing the
best intramural teams in
Flag Football, Cross-
'Country, and Volley ball from
all Community Colleges
together to compete.
The schools that competed
were Wayne Community
College, Southeastern
Community College, Samp
son Technical Institute, and
Johnson Technical Institute.
see was represented in two
events, Cross-Country and
Volleyball. Unfortunately our
Cross Country runners,
Richard Smith and General
Johnson were unable to win
their event, the Volleyball
team was victorious.
The Volleyball team earned
the right to represent SCC in
Uie tournament by defeating
some tough Intramural
teams on our own campus.
The team won four straight
games in extramural com
petition to clinch the
championship, the SCC team
won their first two games by
downing Wayne Community
College in two lop-sided
contests, then beat the much
more experienced Sampson
Tech Team in the next two
games to insure their
championship.
The players on the team
were, Co-Captains Ervin
SmiUi and Terrie Bell, Dennis
Norris, Mitchell Burney
Curtis Qark, Gene Ward and
Jay Young. The teams Ad
visor was Mr. Bob Young.
Extramural tournaments
of this type will be held at the
end of each Quarter at dif
ferent sites. Get involved
today and bring some more
Extramural Championships
to SCC. —BY Curtis Qark'

Sports
The 1972-73 Basketball
season is now two weeks old
and along with it the fans
have been exposed to a team
that is phenominal. This
years team promises to be
one of the be^ SCC has ever
had. It is coitered aroimd
four returners, two from last
years team which posted an
overall record of 2M and two
from the 1970-71 team. This
years record is presently 4-1.
Last years record and a
conference Co-Championshio
will be hard to equal, but
Coach Walsh is confident ttiat
this years team can live up to
everyones expectations.
Coach Walsh stated that,
“THIS YEARS TEAM
SEEMS TO HAVE MORE
desire and hustle
THAN last YEARS.^'These
two things could be deter
mining factors in the final
results of the season.
The years team consist of:
Robert Geter, Sophomore, 6-
feet-S, forward, from
Columbia, S.C.; Frank
Alston, Sophomore, 6-feet-6,
also from Columbia; Dennis
Wilson, Guard, SojAomore, 5-
feet-11, from Shallotte;
William (Red) Lane, Meet-
3%, forward-guard, from
Columbia; Sidney Haggins,
Freshman, 6-feet-3, forward
from Fairmont; James
Rhett, Freshman, 5-feet-9,
Kuard. from Columbia;
Donald Majors, Freshman, 6*
foot, forward, from Bronx,
N.Y.; Richard Williams,
freshman, Meet-2V4, from
Southport: Ricky Parker.
