SOUTHEASTERN COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Welcome Dr. McCarter
Vol. 9
February, 1974
No. 1
Southeastern is privileged
to have Dr. Ronald McCarter
as its new president. Dr.
McCarter is originally from
Burlington, N.C. where he
presently owns a small farm.
He comes to us from New
River Community College,
Dublin, Virginia, where he
was Dean of Instruction.
McCarter received a Doctor
of Education Degree from
NCSU - his minor was in
Political Science. (His A.B.
and M.Ed. degrees were
earned at UNC-Chapel Hill.)
Dr. McCarter described his
first few weeks here as being
very hectic and busy with the
adjustments necessary for
this new position. He ex
pressed his attraction for
small communities and for
the ideals of community
colleges.
In talking with Dr. Mc
Carter, we found that some of
his interests were in hor
seback riding, tennis, folk
guitar, and swimming. He
admitted however that
graduate work had taken
most of his time in the last
few years.
President McCarter voiced
his opinion on several sub
jects that may affect our
institution in the future. He
described the fuel shortage as
a possible threat to future
enrollment and spoke of the
possibility of having fewer
class days with longer
classes. When asked to
conunent on the recent
decline In college enrollment,
Dr. McCarter stated that the
elimination of the draft could
have caused some of the
decline as well as the fact
that post-war chUdren have
already finished school.
Lastly, the new president
gave us his overall opinion of
KC in naming our school as
one of the finer conMnunity
colleges with an excellent
staff.
With regard to his feelings
toward students, he
suggested that all students
engage in helpful dialogue
with him. He wants students
to show alertness as well as
fairness in expressing their
opinions.
In interviewing Dr. Mc
Carter for this write-up, we
noticed his quickness and
precision in answering our
questions. He presents
himself in a very impressive
and intellectual manner. We
believe he will be a sincere
and capable administrator
with the youth and vitality for
the job.

DR. RONALD McCARTER
New Faculty Member At SCC
Southeastern is privileged
to have a new “faculty
member” that Is capable of
outdoing, with greater speed
and efficiency, any member
of our staff. This new
member has an oriental
name: “Wang”. It Is also
known as the 2200 B-1 Ad-
vanced Programable
Calculator. In case you
haven’t guessed by now, this
new member Is electronic
and not human!
In Interviews with Dr.
Johnson and Dr. Grigsby,
some characteristics and
capabilities of the calculator
were explained. The In
strument has a built - In
memory storage and a
display screen, similar to a
smrfl TV screen. "Wang” Is
capable of preserving data
and programs on cassette
tapes for later use. Also, the
calculator prints out results
of programs with additional
graph plotting capabilities.
Three basic functions may
be performed using the
calcidator:
(1) Calculations that
smaller types of calculators
can do
(2) Series of mathematical
operations by basic com
mands
(3) Operations similar to a
large computer by
programming In a computer
language (Basic).
Beginning Spring Quarter
this year, two sections of
MAT 103 will be taught ex
clusively the use of the new
calculator. Also, use of the
calculator will be Integrated
into other College Parallel,
Vocational, and Technical
Programs. Since many
phases of modern life are
affected by electronic
calculators (bank savings,
college registrations,
criminal Investigations,
etc.), students shoidd find
their acquaintance with
“Wang” a valuable ex
perience.

The Energy Crisis
NEW
faculty MEMBER" AT SCC
The Energy Crisis Is a
matter that very few people
are taking seriously. Too
many people have the idea
that it won’t happen to them
so they can do anything they
wish. These are the people
who should wake up to the
reality of this matter.
“There is no Energy
Crisis”, I am told by severd
people, but they are badly
mistaken. If they would pay
more attention to news
reports, and magazine ar
ticles, they might find out
differently.
What really hurts Is when
people won’t “go an extra
mile” to help preserve
energy. WHY? Because each
individual* says the other
person will drive no faster
than fifty-five, and cut down
the heat in his home.
What is it going to take to
wake you people up to the
reality of the Energy Crisis? I
can tell you! People will not
feel the pressure until they
can no longer get gas to run
their cars, and no longer get
fuel to heat their homes.
A question was put to a
class of mine by the in
structor. She asked “How
many of you would be willing
to write a letter to the school
asking them to cut down the
heat ; and how many would be
willing to drive fifty-five and
cut the heat down In their own
homes?” Only five out of a
class of approximately
twenty students were willing
to make any kind of sacrifice
to preserve energy.
Why are you people so
determined to have things
your way when you are
hurting each other? Why
can’t you see the significance
of preserving energy?
PLEASE! WAKE UP TO
REAUTY BEFORE IT IS
TOO LATE! It is a matter
where EVERYBODY MUST
PARTiaPATE, not just a
minority!
