Mary Venessa Malloy
won the title of Miss SCC
on November 13, 1976 at
SCC’s auditorium. Her
talent was a vocal
presentation from Porgy
and Bess, “My Mans’
Gone Now”. Her voice
was superb and enjoyed
by all. She really brought
the house down.
Margie Lee Flowers
was the second runner-up
and her talent was also
vocal. She sang, “The
Way We Were.”
Rebecka Hood was 1st
runner-up and selected an
“Essay on Art”, which
was quite unique.
Ms. Jeanne Swanner
Robertson was master of
ceremonies, and her
personality was quiet
outstanding and held the
attention of all.
Our own Miss Sue
Hawks was the director of
the pageant. Professional,
it was. If you did not
come, you did miss a very
good pageant.
To you Venessa, wear
your crown proudly.
Annie Coston.

Miss SCC Is Crowned
J. Michael Bennett, an
instructor in the SCC
Reading - English
program, has recently
completed his doctorate
in Reading Education at
the University of Georgia,
where he studied under
the distinguished
professor Dr. Ira E.
Aaron. As a part of his
dissertation, Dr. Bennett
developed three in
structional modules
designed to prepare
secondary school
language arts teachers to
effectively teach basic
English-Reading classes.
A study to determine the
feasibility of the modules
was conducted on the SCC
campus with Columbus
County secondary
Language Arts teachers
last summer.
Dr. Bennett was
graduated Cum Laude
from the University of
Florida, where he was a
class-mate of another
member of our English
Department, Mr. Barry
Nation. He was sub
sequently awarded a Ford
Fellowship which enabled
him to complete his
master’s degree in
English Education
(M.A.E.) at the same
institution.
He then moved to Los
Angeles and accepted a
position as an Executive
Sales Representative with
the Xerox Corporation.
After a successful two
years in Los Angeles he
transferred to Atlanta,
and then to Athens,
Georgia, and began his
doctoral work. After one
year he resigned his
position with Xerox and
accepted a teaching and
assistantship at the
University of Georgia.
Dr. Bennett taught
Reading and English in
Florida, Georgia, and
North Carolina, and along
with Drs. Grigsby and
Marlin, completed his
doctorate while teaching
at Southeastern. We are
pleased to have a sincere
scholar and dynamic
teacher such as Dr.
Bennett on our faculty.
We wish him the best of
luck in his professional
pursuits, and hearty
congratulations on a
difficult job well-done.
