Mrs. Ann Mott Smith is
probably the first and
only black female in the
Columbus County area
appointed as a news
reporter. Mrs. Smith
graduated from Armour
High School (know now as
AcmeDelco High) in 1966.
She is a graduate of Shaw
University. Her major
there was business, and
she obtained a minor in
broadcasting. She was
married in 1973 to
Evangelist Smith. He is
now away in Texas. Mrs.
Smith, believe it or not,
takes care of the church
when he is out. She is also
an evangelist . The Smiths
have two kids, ages 2
years and seven months.
Let’s not forget Mrs
Smith is secretary of
Child Development, nere
at Southeastern Com
munity College. She also
spends time with the kids
inthecenter. She says she
enjoys this.
Mrs. Smith was anchor
person for the radio news
program at ®
University. In 1970 s
worked at a radio .
in New York. There sne
did not do news; she am
interviews. After th
Mrs. Smith came back
her hometown: Bolto ,
North Carolina. She
married later. She then
went to WVOE as a
bookkeeper. She also did a
Gospel program.
Mrs. Smith decided she
was going to give up
broadcasting. She
couldn’t find a job in the
field she was satisfied
with. Then on March 10th,
Frank Suggs, now a part-
time student at
Southeastern Community
College, told her of the
opportunity of being a
news reporter for WWAT-
TV 3. Mrs. Smith says she
loved this type work
because she had always
done it and wanted to do
it, so she couldn’t let the
opportunity slip away
without a challenge for
the position. Mrs. Smith
says she loves her present
job and wouldn’t give it
up.
Mrs. Smith made a
most important
statement. She said that
she can’t do this job
alone; she must have help
from the Columbus
County people. She says
with the help of the county
people she can get more
coverage. Mrs. Smith
says too that this is a good
opportunity for the
college. The college can
be given more news
coverage.
Mrs. Smith is now
setting up contacts with
public officials and trying
to find out where the news
wiginates in the county.
She says quote. “I want
Ck)lumbus County to know
we have a pipeline to the
media,” unquote.
After Mrs. Smiths’ busy
day as secretary for
Southeastern Child
Development Center she
is on the road lodiing for
news. She says she wants
Columbus County to get in
the news. Right now Mrs.
Smith gathers the news
and calls it in to the
television station. When
she gets a big enough
story she will be given a
camera or a camera man
from the station will come
in to the area. She will be
seen on the 6:00 and 11:00
news when she begins to
get big stories.
Mrs. Smith is a very
modest lady. She keeps all
these lives separate
without confusion. She is
an example for women
with families who want to
go far. She has asked
most for the support of
Columbus County in her
news coverage.

The 1976-77 Baseball
season has gotten un
derway and the Rams are
off and running. Their
record now stands 5-4
after splitting a double-
header with Wingate
College. The scores were
12-6 and 3-6.
Coach Bob Young say,
“If they play .500 ball, he
will feel that they would
have a good season.”
These are three vets back
from last years’ squad:
Larry Smith, Lloyd Britt,
and Rondie Gore. The rest
are freshmen with the
exception of two college
transfer students, Bubba
Hammonds and Mitch
Cox.
The Rams are led by the
hitting of Mike Hobbs, a
5th round draft choice for
the Montreal Expos from
Hallsboro, N.C. and the
sharp hitting of Bubba
Hammonds.
The positions are as
followed: Allen Barefoot -
1st baseman, Doug West -
2nd baseman, Bubba
Hammonds - shortstop,
Jere Baldwin - 3rd
baseman, Mike Lucas -
catcher (the outfielders
are Bobby Rozier - left
fielder, Mike Hobbs -
center field, Seth Smith -
right fielder. Robert
Moore is a reserve
outfielder with excellent
speed. Rondie Gore
provides strong hitting
and speed as designated
hitter.
There are two ex
perienced pitchers on the
squad: Lloyd Britt and
Larry Smith. The
newcomers are: Leamon
Floyd, who is the main
stay of the bull-pen;
Jamie Godwin, who shows
a lot of promise; and the
transfer - Mitch Cox, who
should help the team out
considerably in April.

Summer In Spain
Recently, a letter was
sent to the Ram’s Horn by
Dr. Arjibay Doreste. The
letter was sent to the
student and members of
Southeastern Community
College to inform them of
a summer program which
enables them to travel
and learn abroad. This
program has been in
existence for the past
eleven years in the United
States and Canada.
For the 12th Summer
School in Spain, the
headquarters will be the
City of Tarragona.
Tarragona is the Capital
of the Old Roman Empire
in Spain and a city of
many historical sights. It
is also surrounded by the
most beautiful beaches on
the Mediterranean Coast.
Students will enjoy the
opportunity of swimming
in the Mediterranean
every day, while learning
Spanish.
Tours are prepared to
visit London, Paris, as
well as Barcelona,
Madrid, Toledo, Avila,
and Valle de los Caidos.
All persons interested
