GEORGE A. THOMPSON
Memorial To
George Thompson
Mr. George A. Thompson of
Chadbourn, North Carolina, was
an active member of the SCC
staff. He worked at the SCC
library for 11 years before he
retired. When Mr. Thompson
retired, he did volunteer work at
SCC’s library under the Retired
Senior Volunteer Program. Mr.
Thompson had given his service
to the school since it opened in
1965.
The college honored him at his
retirement with a small
reception. The event was August
of 1976. During the reception he
was shown the plaque which
marks the George A. Thompson
book collection.
Mr. Thompson passed away
quietly at his home in Chad
bourn. A book collection is set up
so friends may contribute to it
money or books whatever is of
their choice.
Members and students of SCC
will remember him and his
attributes to the college. We all
know that we have lost a great
friend and worker.

Mitch "Campy” Jones
On February 24, 1977,
six students, several staff
members, and members
of the community met at
the doorway of SCC to
venture off to Europe. All
residented in London; but
the group traveled and
visited many famous
places such as: West
Minis ter Abbey ,
Picadilly, Canterbury
Cathedral, Big Ben
Buckingham Palace, St.
Paul’s Cathedral, Pit-
ticoat Lane and many
other places.
James Starnes and wife
say, “words would not
describe the feelings. Our
first reactions to London
were “jet lag” and
“cultural shock. We
were amazed at our
guide’s accent, frightened
as our bus sped down the
wrong side of the road,
and captivated by
beautiful country homes
surrounded by lovely
winter flowers waving
warm welcomes as we
passed.” James starnes
points out also that there
was quite a language
barrier and there were
different names given to
law enforcers - bobbie,
elevators-lifts, drug store
-chemist, sub - way - tube,
and one paid in pounds
and pense. “I can’t
believe it. We are in
London, England, and it’s
wonderful.”
“Mr. Welborne and
Miss Christa Balogh were
great tour guides and my
only regret of the whole
trip is that we didn’t have
time to do everything
twice. I am now saving
my money for the next
SCC event.” Take Jim’s
advice and do without a
few cigarettes and con
serve your gas money and
join the next tour. “It is a
pleasurable learning ex
perience that words
cannot adequately
describe.” In James
Starnes conclusion, he
states, “My wife and I
thoroughly enjoyed the
experience. It was well
worth Every penny that it
cost us and our beautiful
memories will long be
retained. Thanks for
making it happen SCC,
and do it again.”
Mark Elliott, a student
who also made the trip to
Europe says, “the trip
was breathtaking.” He
went on to tell me that
since it was Mr.
Welborne’s birthday
while on tour, there was a
celebration for the oc
casion and dinner at a
Hungarian restaurant
which everyone seemed to
have enjoyed thoroughly.
I asked Mark Elliott if
he would recommend
others to tour Europe and
this was his reply; “If you
ever have an opportunity
to visit Europe, please do
so. I was greatly im
pressed and enjoyed
every moment.”
Readers, my advice to
all, go to Europe when the
opportunity presents
itself; for we seemed to
have missed a treat.
