The Elon College Weekly. LOCALS AND PERSONALS. Miss Cornelia Bryan went to Greens boro Saturday, shopping. Mrs. P. H. Fleming spent one day last week at Dr. Moffit’s. Misses Pitt and Barnes spent Sunday with Miss Willie Ames, in Graham. Miss Hattie Ashburn spent Saturday and Sunday at her home in Liberty. Mrs. Helen Winburn is visiting her sister, Mrs. Rowland, in Franklin, Va. Mr. Herbert Moffitt spent several days last week with his brother. Dr. Moffitt. Mrs. T. C. Amick returned Friday from a visit to her father's home near Liberty. In Y. M. C. A., Saturday evenmg, Mr. D. C. Holt led, using as his subject, "Obedience." Dr. J. U. Newman filled the pulpit at the eleven o’clock service, preaching one of his very inspiring sermons. In Y. W. C. A., Sunday afternoon, Miss Ethel DuRant led, using as a sub ject, "The Worth of Woman." Rev. J. I. Cobb, from Missouri, has been visiting his brother, Prof. J. T. Cobb. They spent Sunday in Burling ton. Mrs. E. L. Moffitt’s mother, Mrs. Rhodes, from Harrisonburg, Va., has been with her for a week on account of Dr. Moffitt's illness. Mr. H. C. Simpson, of the class of 1 RQ6. nf Greensboro, with his two little daughters. Margaret and Annie, visited friends here last Sunday. Misses Sadie Fonville, Pearl Fogle- man. Messrs. Sipe Fleming. Claude Fon ville and Vitus Holt spent Saturday and Sunday at their homes in Burlington. Mr. A. C. Hall was the leader in Christian Endeavor Sunday evening. Subject. "Christ Our King." The meet ing was especially good, with a large and appreciative audience. Li the business meeting of Y. W. C. A., on last Thursday, Misses Mary Fos ter and Sadie Fonville were elected as delegates to the convention to be held in Asheville the first of June. Dr. M. T. Morrill, Foreign Missionary Secretary, was a pleasant visitor here last Sunday night and Monday. He spoke to the students Monday evening a few minutes on The Student Volunteer Movement, which was appreciated very much. Dr. Moffitt, who has been critically ill for some time, was carried to St. Leo s Hospital, in Greensboro, Saturday, where he underwent a successful operation Sun day morning, and his many friends will be glad to know that his condition is now favorable. in Psiphelian Society Friday evening, those who deserved special mention were Misses Sadie Fonville and Lila Newman, concert reading, "Trouble in the Amen Corner;" Miss Laura Bond, "The Lives of Three Famous Musicians;" Miss Ethel Du Rant, piano solo. Those who attended the Southern Christian Convention at Suffolk last week I were Dr. J. O. Atkinson, Revs. J. W. ! Patton, J. W. Wellons, L. 1. Cox, C. C. I Peele, J. O. Cox and Prof. W. P. Law rence. In Philologian Society Friday evening, the best speaker oratorically was B. J. Earp. Query, "Resolved, That Gov ernor Patterson was justifiable in pardon ing Colonel Cooper." Best speaker on , the affirmative, D. C. Holt. Best speaker on the negative, W. F. Warren. Nega tive won. In Clio Society Friday evening, the best speaker oratorically was J. A. Dickey. Debate, query, "Resolved, That the United States should aid and encourage a private corporation to build a system of railways that would be ac- cessable to all parts of the country." Best speaker on the affirmative, J. S. Lincoln. Best speaker on the negative, C. J. Fel ton. Affirmative won. The following had a very delightful time Saturday and Sunday at a house party at Dr. J. W. McPherson’s, Haw River : Misses Bessie McPherson, Nan nie Baker and Macie Farmer, Carrie Boyd, Lois Davidson, Mary and Beulah Foster and Affie Griffin, Messrs. Marvin McPherson, J.J. Ingle, R. A. Campbell, Henry Fleming, A. C. Hall, from Elon College; Mr. Roy Johnson, from Dur ham ; Mr. W. A. Hornaday, from Raleigh, and Mr. D. B. Bryan, from Chapel Hill.
