North Carolina^ i * Book Review I * LITERATURE IN THE ALBEMARLE By Bettie Freshwater Pool (Literature in the Albemarle, by Bet tie Freshwater Pool, is published by the Baltimore City Printing and Bind ing Company, Baltimore, Maryland, and is on sale by the author, Miss Bet tie Freshwater Pool, Elizabeth City, N. C. The price is $2.00 net, cloth bound and attractively stamped in gold.) Of special interest to the people of Eastern North Carolina and to all North Carolinians in general is the book, “Lit erature in the Albemarle,’’ by Miss Bettie Freshwater Pool, of Elizabeth City, N. C. It is of peculiar interest to the former because of the fact that it deals exclusively with the writers of the eastern section of the state, and to the latter because it is written by a North Carolinian and makes a distinc tive and unique contribution to the lit erature of North Carolina. The chief object of the book is to preserve, in attractive form, the hitherto unpublish ed literature produced by the writers of the Albemarle section. In case an author has had books published Miss Pool gives only brief extracts present ing his best style and depicting the nature of his work. This stanza from a poem, “Harp of the South,” by the author, expresses well her purpose in compiling and writing this book: “Harp of the South, too long this land of ours— Home of the free, the brave— So rich in story, bright with honor’s flow ’rs, Beholds thy strings unstrung. Her noblest deeds no golden chord hath rung Sound glorious praise! Harp of the South, awake I ” Miss Pool's object is to ring the “golden chords” in honor of these writers of the Albemarle, “Literature in the Albemarle” is a collection of the biographies and selec tions from the works of twenty-four of the writers of that section. This num ber includes a similar sketch of the author, the biographical part of which is written by William M. Hinton. To obtain the data necessary for the •writ ing of these biographies has required years of painstaking research and care ful investigation and the author de serves high commendation for having so worthily made this survey. Each writer is portrayed with sympathy and understanding. She possesses a rare insight, a cultured and incisive mind, and this is revealed in the delineations which she draws of the writers about whom her sketches are written, ^he author’s style is particularly pleasing, clear, fresh, fluent and charming. Her own poetry is delightful in its regard for simplicity, sincerity, idealistic thought and optimism. It has a musical rhythm and an unaffected beauty. She has made a nice discrimination in the selection of the extracts both of prose and poetry by the other writers who are included in the book. Some of these are near to perfection and many show genuine literary merit. One of her own prose selections, “The Nag’s Head Pic ture of Theodosia Burr,” is especially interesting because of the information and historical *lore contained therein. Although the volume is somewhat lim ited in its scope it possesses a high de gree of exc'ellence and should flnd a place in every library in the state. It would also serve excellently as a sup plementary reading taught in con,nec- tion with the literature classes in the high schools and colleges of the state. It is of peculiar interest because it is written about North Carolinians by a North Carolinian. “O queenly State! Lift up thy fair, proud head. The while thy sons and daughters honor theel” manhattaij SHIRTS SOCIETY BRAND I i CLOTHES Our Opening Display Of Men and Boys Spring Suits lOBOl This Store announces the inaugural of its Spring Season and declares its readiness to be of good service to the careful dressers of this community. ocao B.
